About the position

The Sr. Accountant/Payroll Manager at Hampton University is a key role within the Business Operations department, responsible for overseeing all payroll functions. This position ensures the accuracy and timeliness of payroll processes while managing compliance with legal requirements and organizational policies. The ideal candidate will lead a team, coordinate with Human Resources, and stay updated on relevant legislation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation, distribution, and reporting processes for payroll.
  • Oversee compliance with statutory reporting and filing requirements.
  • Compile data from various sources for analysis and compliance monitoring.
  • Manage periodic auditing of payroll records.
  • Coordinate activities with the Human Resources Department for accurate benefits deductions and record keeping.
  • Supervise payroll staff, including hiring, performance management, training, and career development.
  • Stay current with federal, state, and local legal requirements and advise management on necessary actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in managing multiple payroll cycles, preferably in higher education.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations.
  • Hands-on experience with HRIS or payroll systems (Ceridian, Banner, etc.).
  • Proficient with MS Office, especially Excel.
  • Strong leadership skills with prior supervisory experience.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills and excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
