About the position

The Payroll Manager at Hampton University will oversee all payroll functions within the Business Operations department, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal requirements. This role involves managing payroll processes, supervising staff, and staying updated on relevant legislation to advise management accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation, distribution, and reporting processes for payroll.
  • Oversee compliance with statutory reporting and filing requirements.
  • Compile data from various sources for analysis and compliance monitoring.
  • Manage periodic auditing of payroll records.
  • Coordinate activities with departments to ensure accurate benefits deductions and record keeping.
  • Supervise payroll staff including hiring, performance management, training, and career development.
  • Stay current with federal, state, and local legal requirements and advise management on needed actions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in managing multiple payroll cycles, preferably in higher education.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations.
  • Hands-on experience with HRIS or payroll systems (Ceridian, Banner, etc.).
  • Proficient with MS Office, especially Excel.
  • Strong leadership skills with prior supervisory experience.
