About the position

The Sr. Analyst of Product/Service Risk Advisory at American Express plays a crucial role in ensuring that control management is integrated into the daily operations of the organization. This position is part of the U.S. Consumer Services Team, which is responsible for a wide array of consumer products and services, including premium offerings, cobrand partnerships, cash back programs, and lending portfolios. The team is dedicated to making membership a competitive advantage and fostering leadership development among its members. In this role, the Sr. Analyst will provide strategic risk advisory support specifically tailored to product and service areas. This involves collaborating extensively with various partners across different business units, functional areas, and geographical locations. The analyst will assist in compiling best practices and insights from past product launches and change management initiatives, leveraging this information to enhance risk identification throughout the new product lifecycle. Additionally, the Sr. Analyst will engage in daily activities to assess the needs of business unit and functional leaders, ensuring they have a solid understanding of Operational Risk Management (ORM) and controls. This includes conducting annual knowledge assessments and refresher training sessions. The role also requires coordination with product development and service delivery teams to embed operational risk management considerations into the product lifecycle and ongoing service operations. Furthermore, the analyst will facilitate risk awareness and education within product and service teams to improve their risk management capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing strategic risk advisory support for specific product/service areas.
  • Compile best practices and learnings from historical product launches and change management initiatives.
  • Support leveraging compiled best practices to inform risk identification throughout the new product lifecycle.
  • Engage in day-to-day activities to assess the needs of business unit and functional leaders regarding Operational Risk Management (ORM) and controls.
  • Coordinate with product development and service delivery teams to embed operational risk management considerations into the product lifecycle and service operations.
  • Facilitate risk awareness and education within product and service teams.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in operational risk management, particularly within Risk and/or Internal Audit functions.
  • Strong project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in process governance and establishing robust decision-making processes that align with policies and regulatory frameworks.
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc) or certifications are advantageous.
  • Digitally savvy with knowledge or interest in emerging risk fields such as Payments, Artificial Intelligence, and Web3.
  • Experience in assessing the needs of business unit leaders regarding Operational Risk Management and controls.
  • Experience in compiling and sharing best practices from historical product launches and change management initiatives.
  • Experience in supporting coordination with product development and service delivery teams to embed operational risk considerations into the product lifecycle.
