About the position

The Sr. Application Developer will play a crucial role in developing and maintaining applications that analyze and interpret vast amounts of genetic data. This position focuses on delivering high-quality tools that empower scientists to conduct large-scale genome-wide analyses, ultimately contributing to the Regeneron Genetics Center's mission of improving patient outcomes through better medicines. The role requires a strong background in software development, particularly in cloud-based environments, and involves collaboration with a diverse team to enhance existing applications and create new functionalities.

Responsibilities

  • Implement new features to existing applications based on user needs and state-of-the-art genetic analysis methods.
  • Modernize and optimize existing applications to improve performance.
  • Develop new applications and functions to support novel analysis types.
  • Maintain, optimize, and implement new features to web applications, APIs, and command line interfaces (CLI).
  • Interact with other developers to collaborate on priority tasks and assist both back-end and front-end developers.
  • Provide user support by answering questions, understanding specific use cases, fixing bugs, and writing documentation.
  • Communicate and brainstorm new ideas with colleagues who are experts in analysis methods or users of the tools being developed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience in Computational Biology or a related field.
  • Expertise in web application and/or software development.
  • Experience working on a Linux/UNIX command line and SQL databases.
  • Proficiency in high-level programming languages like Python.
  • Experience in developing web applications with Python and/or JavaScript (e.g., Flask and React).
  • Familiarity with data visualization using D3 and Canvas.
  • Experience in continuous integration and continuous development (CI/CD) is preferred.
  • Experience contributing to the development of open-source bioinformatics tools using standard methodologies in version control.
  • Experience working with biological or genomics data is a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity or strong interest in statistical genetics, human genetics, or computational genomics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate methods and present code to various technical audiences.
  • Enjoyment of developing tools and solving challenging problems to aid scientists.
