About the position

Xometry is seeking a highly skilled and experienced CNC machining cost estimator to join our Pre-Sales Engineering team. This role is pivotal in connecting our clients with the manufacturing capabilities they need, ensuring that we provide accurate and competitive quotes for CNC machining projects. The ideal candidate will have a robust background in CNC machining, with at least 8 to 10 years of experience in a quoting environment. This position requires a deep understanding of various CNC machining processes, including but not limited to multi-axis milling, turning, welding, grinding, and EDM. The successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing engineering models and drawings to define the sequence of manufacturing operations, ensuring that the design intent and component quality are met. In this role, you will be tasked with making precise estimations that take into account materials, tooling, manufacturing times, inspection times, and the types of equipment required for each project. Collaboration is key, as you will work closely with machinists, quality assurance teams, engineering, and management to meet customer expectations and ensure on-time order fulfillment. Your ability to source materials and finishes will also play a crucial role in the quoting process, as will your experience with CNC machining/manufacturing cost estimating across various production volumes, from prototypes to high-volume runs. The position demands a strong technical communication aptitude, as you will be required to communicate CNC designs for manufacturability feedback and provide technical support to machinists and process engineers during manufacturing operations. You will also be responsible for creating detailed quote packages for final review, managing quote logs daily, and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) to ensure efficiency and accuracy in the quoting process.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze engineering models/drawings to define the sequence of manufacturing operations to ensure design intent and component quality.
  • Make proper estimations considering materials, tooling, manufacturing times, inspection times, and equipment types required.
  • Collaborate closely with Machinists, Quality, Engineering, Management, and other team members to satisfy end customer needs.
  • Source materials and finishes effectively.
  • Estimate CNC machining/manufacturing costs for prototype, low volume, and high-volume quantities.
  • Review customer RFQs to determine material requirements, processing, and job routing.
  • Communicate with customers to accurately define requirements and expectations.
  • Work with outside vendors/services to achieve the best possible prices and solutions.
  • Consolidate all outside and internal costs associated with process time in engineering, manufacturing, finishing, and QC.
  • Create detailed quote packages for final review.
  • Manage quote logs daily and track KPIs.

Requirements

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in a CNC machining quoting environment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software.
  • Extensive knowledge of CNC machining/manufacturing technologies.
  • Experience with programming and setup of CNC machines (3/4/5 axis milling, CNC lathes, live tooling lathes, Swiss machines).
  • Knowledge of welding, grinding, wire EDM, assemblies, and finishing processes.
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills and discipline.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze DFM (design for manufacturing) problems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with sourcing materials and finishes.
  • Knowledge of protocols, standards, technologies, and machining applications.
