About the position

The Senior Systems Design Engineer II at Starkey is a pivotal role responsible for leading the design of innovative hearing technologies, including hearing aids, accessories, and associated software. This position requires a deep understanding of system architecture and the ability to translate user needs into comprehensive system requirements. The engineer will engage in risk analysis, problem-solving, and issue resolution while collaborating with various engineering teams. Effective communication skills and technical expertise are essential, as the engineer will interact with product management, marketing, and sales to ensure that the products meet the needs of patients and clinicians. The role demands a proactive approach to design, with a focus on creating best-in-class solutions in the hearing aid industry. The engineer will also mentor junior engineers and contribute to process improvements within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the definition of system architecture and system-level requirements for hardware, software, features, accessories, and mobile applications.
  • Execute requirements development and management, identifying best practices and utilizing requirement management tools.
  • Interact with cross-functional customer-facing groups to ensure product capabilities are accurately reflected in the architecture description.
  • Own Systems Impact Analysis and drive system design options and recommendations for product change requests and scope change requests.
  • Document and deliver high-level system architecture, design, interfaces, risks, and tradeoffs that support product development schedules.
  • Create system/subsystem architecture design documents, including operational concepts and verification matrices.
  • Translate user requirements and design guidelines into system-level requirements using requirement management techniques.
  • Ensure system requirements are accurate, complete, and delivered on time throughout the product life cycle.
  • Generate and maintain traceability from user requirements to system requirements.
  • Drive risk analysis and mitigation plans in collaboration with the program/project team.
  • Facilitate cross-functional peer reviews of requirements and own resulting action items.
  • Ensure all system requirements are met and drive compliance assessments during product lifecycle design reviews.
  • Support Systems Verification Engineers in creating valid verification plans for integration points of programs/projects.
  • Identify, analyze, and drive system-level technical issues to resolution, documenting steps to reproduce and configuration under test.
  • Mentor and provide direction to junior engineers, technicians, and interns, while proactively owning process improvements.
  • Perform as Program or Project Tech Lead or Program Systems Design Lead as assigned, facilitating technical meetings and driving cross-functional test planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering or a related field; Master's degree in lieu of Bachelor's with a minimum of 8 years of industry experience in product/technology development.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in a product and/or technology development environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of system engineering principles, including requirement generation, system architecture, system design, risk management, and verification.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of hearing aid architecture and design, including audiological features and programming software.
  • General to intermediate knowledge of analog, digital, mixed signal circuits, and multi-component electrical devices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with software development processes and high- and low-level programming languages.
  • Familiarity with signal processing concepts, including block diagrams and audio acoustics.
