About the position

The Raytheon Smart Digital Factory and Automation team (SDF&A) is seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated team member to take on the role of Principal Automation Systems Engineer in support of Raytheon Forest Consolidated Manufacturing Centers. This position will be responsible for executing automation projects within the Forest factory. The Automation Systems Engineer will work for the Forest Automation Systems Engineering Manager, and will collaborate with local factory leadership, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, operations, supply chain, and front end of the business Automation Lead to execute automation development and deployment and incorporate advanced Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 technologies as well as identify opportunities for process improvements via lean techniques. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in automation systems design, development, deployment, validation, and sustainment in a factory setting, with an emphasis on electrical controls including automation systems such as torque controllers, robots, vision systems, and PLCs. Additionally, experience with process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems is essential. The role requires the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Secret security clearance, and U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a Secret security clearance. Candidates should possess a minimum of 5 years of professional experience related to engineering, manufacturing, operations, and/or automation, typically requiring a University Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) or an Advanced Degree in a related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience. The position also involves leading and managing engineers and technical trades on project teams, demonstrating strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and driving Change Management projects to deliver results.

Responsibilities

  • Execute automation projects within the Forest factory.
  • Collaborate with local factory leadership, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, operations, supply chain, and Automation Lead.
  • Incorporate advanced Smart Factory/Industry 4.0 technologies into automation development and deployment.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements via lean techniques.
  • Design, develop, deploy, validate, and sustain automation systems in a factory setting.
  • Manage dotted line relationships across multiple disciplines.
  • Lead/manage engineers and technical trades on project teams.

Requirements

  • 5 years professional experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, and/or automation.
  • University Degree in STEM or an Advanced Degree in a related field with minimum 3 years experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued Secret security clearance.
  • Experience in automation systems design, development, deployment, validation, and/or sustainment in a factory setting.
  • Experience with process integration and electromechanical/mechatronic systems.
  • Experience in Ignition development.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineering terms and principles.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric Code, UL508A).
  • Strong understanding of automation programming environments including ladder logic, function block, and Python.
  • Knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
  • Proven leadership skills, especially in managing dotted line relationships across multiple disciplines.
  • Demonstrated technical background with an understanding or hands-on experience in software, firmware, and electronics development.
  • Experience working in Agile teams.
  • Experience working in SAP Manufacturing Execution Systems.
  • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 / Smart Factory concepts, Digital Manufacturing Simulation.
