As a Senior Certified Coder for Acute Inpatient, you will be responsible for reviewing inpatient records to ensure that the diagnosis and procedure codes performed during the patient's stay are valid and in accordance with coding conventions and guidelines. This role involves working on routine assignments within defined parameters, established guidelines, and precedents. You will follow established procedures and receive daily instructions on your work. Your essential functions will include abstracting and assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and PCS codes from the inpatient patient record to ensure accurate MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment, which is crucial for reimbursement and statistical data submissions. You will utilize your understanding of MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodologies, generate compliant physician queries, and collaborate with clinical documentation integrity and quality departments to identify issues affecting inpatient records. Additionally, you will validate appropriate dates of service against documentation in the EMR for inpatient encounters and complete required abstract fields in registration conversations for OSHPD and other data submissions. You will also be responsible for auditing medical records to ensure proper coding is completed and compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies. This includes reviewing, understanding, and applying quarterly coding clinics, coding guidelines, and coding conventions of ICD-10-CM references. You will provide coding feedback and education to departmental leadership regarding the completeness and accuracy of documentation and physician coding practices, analyze content of reports and software edits, and follow up on coding holds and revenue cycle department holds. Maintaining required online Healthstream education courses and attending meetings and training related to coder education will also be part of your responsibilities.
