About the position

The Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer to join its innovative team. This position is a one-year contract with the potential for extension, focusing on the development and commercialization of cutting-edge carbon removal technologies. The ICM is dedicated to translating pioneering carbon management strategies from laboratory and bench-scale to pre-commercial and commercial-scale devices, prototypes, and software solutions. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the design, development, and optimization of chemical processes and plant designs across various scales, including bench, pilot, and commercial levels. This role requires a strong commitment to safety and environmental standards, ensuring that all operations comply with applicable regulations. As a Senior Chemical Process Engineer, you will collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists, working closely with diverse subject matter experts who are focused on impactful results and meeting project schedules. Your responsibilities will include the development of engineering packages for metallurgical processes, oil refining, petrochemical, gas processing, and other chemical industries. You will also be expected to leverage your expertise in CAD software and process simulation tools to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the projects undertaken by ICM. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the commercialization of technologies that have already received recognition, such as the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE and the 2021 Liveability Challenge.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop chemical processes and plant designs across various scales (bench, pilot, commercial).
  • Optimize existing processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards and regulations.
  • Develop basic or detailed engineering packages for metallurgical or oil refining/petrochemical/gas processing/chemical industries.
  • Utilize CAD software for drafting and design purposes.
  • Employ Aspen Plus modeling and simulation tools for process analysis and optimization.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of experience in chemical process design.
  • Experience in developing basic or detailed engineering packages for metallurgical or oil refining/petrochemical/gas processing/chemical industries.
  • Familiarity with CAD packages like AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, or DraftSight.
  • Proficiency with Aspen Plus modeling and simulation, and Aspen Icarus cost estimation tools.
  • A self-starter who collaborates effectively and communicates clearly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with electrochemical systems including electrolyzers and fuel cells.
  • PhD in engineering, preferably in Chemical Engineering.
