About the position

The City of Greensboro is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join the Transportation Engineering division. This role is pivotal in administering the City's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program, which involves evaluating submitted applications, overseeing data collection, and conducting safety analyses, including the construction of collision diagrams. The engineer will also be responsible for organizing neighborhood meetings, developing projects, and assisting with the traffic count program to ensure accurate transportation data collection that supports various GDOT plans and programs. Additionally, the engineer will investigate neighborhood traffic safety concerns and coordinate recommendations with affected customers. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential for this position, as the engineer will represent GDOT at regular board and commission meetings and respond to citizen transportation-related concerns. In another capacity, the Senior Civil Engineer will administer the City's Traffic Impact Study (TIS) ordinance, which includes scoping and reviewing TISs and maintaining the TIS database. The engineer will manage the city's congestion management program, identifying congested locations and developing projects to mitigate these concerns. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and requires a commitment to public service and community engagement, aligning with the City of Greensboro's mission to enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the City's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program.
  • Coordinate the evaluation of submitted applications for traffic management.
  • Oversee the collection of required data for traffic analysis.
  • Conduct safety analysis including the construction of collision diagrams.
  • Conduct neighborhood meetings and develop related projects.
  • Assist with the traffic count program to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Investigate neighborhood traffic safety concerns and coordinate recommendations with affected customers.

  • Represent GDOT at regular board and commission meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with 4-6 years of experience in reading and interpreting engineering site plans, specifications, and technical reports, or an Associate's Degree with 6-8 years of experience in the same.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or similar Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software for developing detailed design plans and cost estimates.
  • Engineering Intern Certification by NC Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors or ability to acquire it.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Valid Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Civil Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer licensure by NC Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors or ability to acquire it.
  • 4+ years of experience with engineering principles and practices using AASHTO Green Book, MUTCD, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, High Capacity Manual, Highway Safety Manual.
  • 4+ years of experience with Adobe or Bluebeam PDF software.
  • 4+ years of experience with ArcGIS.
