About the position

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Civil/Structural Engineer to work in our Engineering Structural and Seismic Analysis department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research and Education Campus with every other Friday off. You will apply engineering principles to analysis, modeling, and simulation of structural and mechanical systems and components. You will report to the manager of the Engineering Structural and Seismic Analysis department.

Responsibilities

• Provide support in development of engineering design requirements, equipment selection and sizing, vendor equipment summaries and evaluations, specifications, drawings, and engineering analysis and calculations.
• Perform mechanical/civil structural evaluations and analyses of the behavior of structures, systems and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and postulated accident conditions to support continued safe operation of INL nuclear facilities.
• Perform calculations and develop analytical and computational models to investigate nonlinear behavior of nuclear and radiological facilities to seismic ground motion and help identify potential research topics in the field of structural dynamics.
• Participate on technical teams to respond to NEUP, LDRD, and other DOE funding opportunities, create proposals, and secure funding for conducting research.
• Plan and implement research in structural dynamics, seismic-induced non-linear soil structure interaction analysis, site response analysis, and development of advanced seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRAs) methods.
• Document engineering analyses in accordance with Company requirements.
• Create technical reports, peer reviewed publications, proposals, and intellectual property in the seismic and structural dynamics domain within INL.
• Be a technical resource and liaison to other INL organizations and provide support for external collaborations.
• Work both in isolation and as a member of a team.
• Become familiar with ASME, ASCE, ACI, IBC, and other mechanical and structural codes and their relationship to DOE requirements for various safety class structures, systems, and components.
• Help with business planning and development efforts.
• Supply leadership, mentor junior staff, peer review, checking, and consultation to fellow scientists, engineers and others.
• May review work and articles developed by professionals outside the Laboratory.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and 9 years of relevant experience, a Master's degree in Civil Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience, or a PhD in Civil Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience.
• Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Idaho Professional Engineering license within 2 years.
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy 'L' clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
