About the position

As a Senior Commercial Underwriter at Continental Western Group, you will be responsible for accepting, retaining, and pricing moderate to high exposure commercial property and casualty insurance accounts. This role involves managing assigned territories to achieve profitable growth objectives, building strong relationships with agents, and providing underwriting expertise to staff. You will work within established guidelines and authority levels to assess risks, determine pricing, and support agency relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Accept, retain, and price moderate to high exposure commercial property and casualty insurance accounts.
  • Manage assigned territory to achieve profitable growth objectives.
  • Classify and price risks according to established underwriting guidelines.
  • Build strong internal and external business relationships.
  • Analyze competitive marketing data and identify territory needs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor action plans as appropriate.
  • Review renewal accounts and determine acceptable risks.
  • Assess new commercial insurance risks and determine accurate classifications.
  • Evaluate MVRs, financial reports, and loss control reports.
  • Develop and enhance agency relationships to promote profitability and growth.
  • Travel within assigned territory to meet with agents and enhance business relationships.
  • Educate agency staff on pricing and risk selection philosophy.
  • Collaborate with regional Business Development staff to identify new business opportunities.
  • Monitor and report on material changes within the territory's legal environment.
  • Provide professional development knowledge to underwriting staff and agents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or five to seven years of commercial underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of commercial underwriting guidelines, insurance forms, and coverages.
  • Advanced insurance education (e.g., AU, CIC, CPCU) highly desired.
  • Valid driver's license for travel.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of underwriting principles, policy forms, and coverage.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Account relationship management skills.
  • Strong business acumen and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to analyze insurance risks and determine acceptability and pricing.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and desk management skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of or working toward AU, CIC, CPCU or similar designation.
