About the position

BioCryst is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Cost Accounting Manager to join our team. This position is critical in managing the inventory monthly and quarterly close processes, ensuring that they are executed with high quality, accuracy, and efficiency. The successful candidate will play a key role in enabling the company to meet its internal timelines as well as external SEC reporting and filing deadlines. Additionally, the Senior Cost Accounting Manager will ensure that the company's SOX internal controls are operating effectively, which is essential for maintaining compliance and integrity in financial reporting. In this role, the Senior Cost Accounting Manager will be responsible for driving continuous improvement and optimization of business processes related to financial management, particularly in the areas of inventory and manufacturing activities. This is especially important as the company prepares for the potential launch of additional commercial products. The position requires a strong focus on adherence to internal controls over inventory and cost of goods sold, as well as the identification of areas for improvement. The role is fully remote, but candidates must reside in the EST or CST time zones. The Senior Cost Accounting Manager will collaborate closely with various teams, including Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Operations, to ensure accurate accounting practices and timely reconciliations. This position also involves managing SOX 404 inventory compliance, developing policies and processes to standardize operations, and preparing analyses of inventory and cost of goods sold results. The successful candidate will also manage quarterly external audit deliverables and support the planning and execution of annual physical inventory counts across global locations.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accurate and timely completion of monthly/quarterly cost accounting tasks including inventory costing, reserve analysis, cost of goods sold, overhead calculation and cost adjustments.
  • Ensure compliance with capitalization rules surrounding inventory accounting.
  • Prepare and review all inventory-related journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations at month-end.
  • Partner with Supply Chain Management (SCM) to ensure accounting for third-party contract manufacturers is done in accordance with the contracts.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Team on timely and accurate reconciliation of external inventory against internally tracked perpetual balances.
  • Maintain and ensure ongoing compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and SOX Controls.
  • Responsible for SOX 404 inventory compliance including internal control design and documentation, walkthroughs, and testing of controls by both external auditors and internal audit firms.
  • Develop policies, processes, templates, and best practices to standardize and streamline related business processes.
  • Develop and prepare effective analyses of inventory and cost of goods sold actual results and related variances.
  • Collaborate with other finance team members and Supply Chain team to ensure timely and accurate reporting of inventory data and continuous improvement and automation of transactions.
  • Manage quarterly external audit deliverables and provide support related to inventory, quarterly reviews, and cost of sales.
  • Partner with Supply Chain on the planning and execution of annual physical inventory counts for each location globally, including analysis and reporting of results.
  • Maintain documentation required to support 10-Q/10-K financial statement presentation of inventory and cost of goods sold.
  • Collaborate with the IT team on system improvements and enhancements.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance with 7 years of accounting/finance experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of cost accounting experience with 3+ years in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry.
  • Active CPA license.
  • Experience in a fast-paced commercial, publicly traded company required.
  • Experience working in a multi-currency, multi-country environment strongly preferred.
  • Big 4 audit experience preferred.
  • Experience with Oracle ERP (Oracle Fusion a plus) strongly preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of cost accounting/inventory related functions and U.S. GAAP, including cutoff and accruals.
  • Previous oversight of cost accounting month-end closing procedures including financial statement flux analysis and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts (FloQast/Blackline experience preferred).
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (advanced Excel preferred).
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently to manage multiple priorities and creatively determine solutions.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, ability to present financial information in a meaningful and understandable way.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines through effective prioritization of duties and functions.
  • Able to build strong cross-functional relationships.
  • Experience leading and driving process improvements.
