About the position

The Sr. Data Architect at Intermountain Health is a pivotal role responsible for designing, creating, and managing the organization's data architecture. This position is essential for establishing a robust foundation for data management, ensuring that data is organized, accessible, secure, and aligned with the business objectives of the organization. The data architect will be tasked with designing data warehouses, file systems, and databases, while also defining how data will be collected and organized to meet the needs of the organization. In this role, the data architect will interpret and deliver impactful strategic plans aimed at improving data integration, quality, and delivery in support of various business initiatives and roadmaps. The architect will design the structure and layout of data systems, including databases, warehouses, and lakes, and will select and implement database management systems that align with the organization's needs. This includes defining data schemas, optimizing data storage, and establishing data access controls and security measures. The Sr. Data Architect will also define and implement long-term technology strategies and innovation roadmaps across analytics, data engineering, and data platforms. They will design and implement processes for the ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process from various sources into the organization's data systems, translating high-level business requirements into data models and appropriate metadata, test data, and data quality standards. Managing senior business stakeholders is a key responsibility, ensuring strong engagement and alignment of project delivery with longer-term strategic roadmaps. The architect will simplify existing data architecture, delivering reusable services and cost-saving opportunities in line with company policies and standards. They will lead and participate in peer reviews and quality assurance of project architectural artifacts across the Enterprise Architecture group through governance forums, while also defining and managing standards, guidelines, and processes to ensure data quality. Collaboration with IT teams, business analysts, and data analytics teams is crucial to understand data consumers' needs and develop effective solutions. The architect will evaluate and recommend emerging technologies for data management, storage, and analytics, ensuring that the organization remains at the forefront of data architecture best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets and delivers impactful strategic plans improving data integration, data quality, and data delivery in support of business initiatives and roadmaps
  • Designs the structure and layout of data systems, including databases, warehouses, and lakes
  • Selects and implements database management systems that meet the organization's needs by defining data schemas, optimizing data storage, and establishing data access controls and security measures
  • Defines and implements the long-term technology strategy and innovations roadmaps across analytics, data engineering, and data platforms
  • Designs and implements processes for the ETL process from various sources into the organization's data systems
  • Translates high-level business requirements into data models and appropriate metadata, test data, and data quality standards

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Six years experience in database design, development, and business intelligence technologies
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL (structured query language)
  • Demonstrated high degree of flexibility and motivation in an aggressively changing environment
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills to promote and advance business intelligence in collaboration with customers
  • Demonstrated project management skills, customer service skills, and organizational skills
  • Ability to deal with highly sensitive and confidential material and adhere to data security and confidentiality protocols and procedures
  • Knowledge of healthcare concepts including patient care and healthcare financing
  • Knowledge of basic information used in a healthcare environment and how the data is produced, consumed, and transformed
  • Knowledge of advanced data warehousing concepts

Nice-to-haves

  • Design experience in Azure Databricks, PySpark
  • Strong ability in programming languages such as Python, SQL
  • Ability in data science languages/tools such as R, SAS, or Excel
  • Proficiency in the design and implementation of modern data architectures and concepts such as cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP) and modern data warehouse tools (Snowflake, Databricks)
  • Experience with business intelligence tools and technologies such as ETL, Power BI, and Tableau
