About the position

This individual contributor role at CNA focuses on the design, development, and integration of strategic data applications throughout the software development lifecycle, particularly in an Agile environment. The position requires a high level of expertise in building large-scale data processing systems and data lakes, primarily on Google Cloud Platform, while also providing guidance to others in the team. The role emphasizes the importance of quality, reliability, and adherence to established standards, with opportunities to lead various aspects of data pipeline design and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in building large-scale data processing systems and data lakes on Google Cloud Platform.
  • Applies technical knowledge on data modeling and best engineering practices.
  • Delivers results as a key team member, creating value for the CNA brand and stakeholders.
  • Works with external and offshore resources as required.
  • Leads or sub-leads the design, implementation, and automation of data pipelines.
  • Conducts robust unit testing to ensure deliverables match design specifications.
  • Ensures adherence to quality and reliability standards in an Agile environment.
  • Designs complex physical data models and cloud-based data lake constructs.
  • Creates integrated data views based on business or analytics requirements.
  • Researches and implements process improvements for technology gaps.
  • Maintains professional knowledge through workshops and networking.
  • Drives the evolution of CNA application development processes and standards.
  • Applies machine learning where applicable.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of relational database concepts, ETL/ELT, star schema, and data modeling.
  • Strong data integration design and development skills.
  • Proficient in Python or advanced SQL in a business environment with large-scale datasets.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration in a matrixed environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline; Master's preferred.
  • Typically 5+ years of experience in data, analytics, or application development.
  • 2+ years of coding proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, Java, SQL).
  • Experience using Agile methods preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Preferred experience in building data analytics solutions using Google Cloud Platform services.
  • Experience with AWS services such as Amazon Redshift and Elastic MapReduce.
  • Familiarity with code management tools like Github and Concourse.
  • Preferred experience in the insurance industry and its products.
  • Experience in implementing big data processing technology, preferably Apache Spark.
  • Working knowledge of Business Intelligence tools.
