About the position

The Senior Data Engineering Manager at Staples will lead the Enterprise Data & Analytics team, focusing on building and defining advanced analytical models and data solutions architecture to support the North American Delivery organization. This role involves overseeing the development of data structures and pipelines, ensuring data quality and accessibility, and enabling data-driven decision-making across the enterprise. The manager will guide a team of skilled Data Engineers, participate in Agile ceremonies, and collaborate with various stakeholders to drive innovation and efficiency in data operations.

Responsibilities

  • Define and deploy data architecture and governance models.
  • Oversee the design and creation of data architecture and repositories.
  • Develop data products from proof of concept to scalable solutions based on business priorities.
  • Champion technical design sessions to facilitate discussions with architects and engineers.
  • Enable data-driven decision-making by improving access to information for business users.
  • Increase adoption of Data & Analytics through self-service and data catalog initiatives.
  • Manage data flow from internal and external sources using distributed and local data structures.
  • Optimize the data pipeline platform for scalable workloads and diverse use cases.
  • Support mission-critical applications and near real-time data needs.
  • Participate in design and code reviews and collaborate with cybersecurity teams to secure data.
  • Assist in developing internal standards for data engineering and system documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Sciences, Data Analytics, Management Information Systems, or related quantitative field in Data Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in designing and building scalable on-prem/cloud data engineering solutions using distributed frameworks like Spark and Hadoop.
  • Strong hands-on coding experience with languages like Python, PySpark, and SQL.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring direct staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Airflow, Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure (e.g., Azure, GCP).
  • Hands-on experience with cloud data warehousing services like Snowflake.
  • Experience in SnowSQL, GCP - BigQuery, Cloud SQL, DataFlow, Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions.
  • Experience in developing User Defined Functions (UDF) in Python and SQL.
  • Understanding of upcoming data technology trends and implementations of data API solutions.
