About the position

As a Senior Data Scientist specializing in Search at Target, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the digital experience for our customers. This position is part of the Search and Browse Data Science team, which is responsible for building the core relevance engine and Data Science products that power Target's online platforms. You will collaborate with business partners to devise solutions for complex business challenges in a dynamic and global environment. Your work will involve designing high-quality, flexible, and efficient Data Science systems and services that can scale effectively. In this role, you will architect Data Science solutions that are capable of capturing, processing, and mining vast datasets within the retail sector. You will be encouraged to think innovatively and utilize cutting-edge machine learning algorithms and natural language processing (NLP) techniques to enhance Target's Mobile and Web Search systems. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will influence the Data Sciences team and Product teams through your interactions, implementing solutions that align with the scale and scope of your responsibilities. You will also contribute to the culture of Data Sciences and Target by embodying our core values. Your expertise in machine learning algorithms, linear algebra, probability theory, statistics, and optimization theory will be essential as you perform data exploration and analysis. This includes examining data distributions, identifying anomalies, and creating visualizations. You will implement algorithmic solutions based on specifications while adhering to best practices in model development. Additionally, you will be expected to follow foundational programming principles, ensuring that your code is well-maintained, tested, and documented. You will have the opportunity to develop in approved programming languages such as Java, Scala, Python, or R, while also learning and applying best practices in data analysis and understanding.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with business partners to provide solutions for business problems in a fast-paced environment.
• Design and implement high-quality, flexible, and performant Data Science systems and services at scale.
• Architect Data Science solutions that capture, process, and mine large datasets in the retail industry.
• Utilize machine learning algorithms and NLP techniques to improve Mobile and Web Search systems.
• Perform data exploration and analysis, including examining distributions and identifying anomalies.
• Implement algorithmic solutions based on specifications while adhering to best practices in model development.
• Follow foundational programming principles to create a well-maintainable and tested codebase with relevant documentation.
• Develop in approved programming languages such as Java, Scala, Python, or R.

Requirements

• 4-year degree in Quantitative disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) or equivalent experience.
• PhD or MS in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics or related quantitative field.
• Research and/or industry experience in Information Retrieval, Query Understanding, Machine Learning, NLP, and Recommendation systems.
• Demonstrated experience in Search Indexing, Retrieval, Ranking, or Query Understanding.
• 3+ years of experience implementing Machine Learning models and algorithms into production at scale.
• Proficient in Python or Java with advanced coding and problem-solving skills.
• Exceptional modeling skills using Python.
• Experience querying large databases with SQL, HQL, or similar variations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for partnering with global teams.
• Constant learner mentality that stays updated on advancements in Search, Query Understanding, ML, and NLP.
