About the position

The Senior Database Administrator at BAE Systems will play a crucial role in supporting the mission of Strategic Deterrence by ensuring the smooth operation and security of databases. This position involves implementing and maintaining database systems, conducting performance tuning, and ensuring compliance with Department of Defense directives. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in database management and a strong focus on security and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain smooth operation and physical design of databases
  • Conduct performance tuning of indexes and databases
  • Review database design and integration of systems
  • Provide backup recovery and make recommendations regarding enhancements and/or improvements
  • Monitor transition activity and utilization
  • Train other departments for overlap support and any cross-department end-user training
  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve faults and errors in applications
  • Develop recommendations for enhancing approaches for software support services
  • Develop security baselines and standards for AWS and on-premises resources
  • Ensure adherence to IT infrastructure standards, policies, and procedures
  • Update works instruction documentation and standard operating procedures
  • Collaborate with vendors in the research, development, and implementation of various technologies
  • Troubleshoot and resolve daily support tickets including end-user support via phone, email, and remote control
  • Ensure databases are compliant with all applicable Department of Defense (DoD) directives and guidelines.

Requirements

  • High School diploma and 12 years related IT experience, or BA/BS degree with 10 years of related IT experience, or MS degree with 8 years of related IT experience
  • Strong experience and proficiency in Database Administration, including Database Design, Configuration, Maintenance, Performance Tuning, Patching, and Upgrades
  • Strong knowledge of database security, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery practices
  • Experience with database management systems, such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, etc.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external resources
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple related projects and assignments
  • Experience collaborating with vendors in the research, development, and implementation of server technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Puppet, Chef and DevOps practices
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering concepts
  • Experience with supporting large-scale deployments as an administrator
  • Experience with technical project management
  • Previous success in developing standards, process improvement, and managing processes
  • Working technical knowledge of network, storage, server, and database technologies
  • Proficient ability to review, analyze, document, and explain technical systems and data
  • Knowledge of migrating and/or extending on-premises software to the cloud
  • Knowledge of AWS Cloud Platform (IaaS) is preferred
  • SQL (read/interpret tables and columns)
  • User Acceptance Testing (UAT)
  • Superb customer service skills
  • Fast, aggressive learner
  • AWS Cloud Certification is preferred
  • Microsoft/Oracle Certifications preferred.
