About the position

The position involves a comprehensive role in designing, planning, implementing, testing, and administering multiple databases, with a strong focus on security, access, and documentation. The successful candidate will manage and administer complex information technology systems to ensure that system design and operation align with business needs. This role requires providing guidance and experience on various projects or programs, serving as a team leader, and performing thorough analyses of issues and risks that may arise during operations. Daily administrative tasks are a significant part of this role, including backup and recovery processes, performance optimization, space management, database health monitoring, and troubleshooting to maintain multiple databases in support of client needs. The candidate will proactively monitor database performance and troubleshoot issues as they arise. Collaboration is key, as the role involves working cross-functionally with engineers, developers, and the user base to optimize queries, fix performance bottlenecks, improve existing schemas, and design new ones. Additionally, the position requires creating and maintaining change control and testing processes, conducting research, and making recommendations on products, services, protocols, and standards while planning for the future growth of data assets. The role also includes writing automation scripts to provision and manage PostgreSQL on Kubernetes, creating and maintaining SQL scripts for data extraction, migration, and maintenance, and reviewing development and deployment processes related to databases to identify areas for improvement. Documentation is crucial, as the candidate will be responsible for creating and maintaining troubleshooting playbooks, testing failover, and recovery plans.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, planning, implementing, testing, and administering multiple databases, including security, access, and documentation.
  • Manage and administer complex information technology systems to ensure system design and operation meets business needs.
  • Provides guidance and experience on a project or program, serves as a team leader, and performs analysis of issues and risks.
  • Perform daily administrative tasks, including backup/recovery, performance optimization, space management, DB health, monitoring event logs, and troubleshooting to maintain multiple databases in support of client needs.
  • Proactively monitor database performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Work cross-functionally with engineers, developers, and user base to optimize queries, fix performance bottlenecks, improve existing schemas and design new ones.
  • Create and maintain change control and testing processes.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on products, services, protocols, and standards; planning for future growth of data assets.
  • Writing automation to provision and manage PostgreSQL on Kubernetes.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience and a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work/military experience.
  • PostgreSQL DBA experience (or other similar database administration experience).
  • Exceptional SQL development and performance tuning skills.
  • Expertise with Postgres system metrics and optimization strategies.
  • Familiarity with system level metrics and practical use of common Linux utilities.
  • Mastery of one of the following scripting languages: Python, Perl, Bash.
  • Exceptional communication skills to interact with customers, development, and operations teams.
  • Active TS/SCI clearance required to start and eligibility to obtain CIPoly required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Oracle DB, MySQL and/or SQL.
  • Proficient in Linux, including installation and daily use as a development environment.
  • Experience with Linux and Git.
