About the position

The Sr Electrical Engineer for Traction Power Sub Station Design at Amtrak is responsible for the preparation and review of designs for complex electrification engineering projects. This includes the design and construction of electrification facilities such as traction power substations and power conversion facilities. The role requires collaboration with various departments, providing technical expertise, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. The engineer will also lead the development of new electrical standards and prototype equipment, while managing both in-house and consultant design projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review designs for electrification engineering projects.
  • Ensure compliance with industry and Amtrak standards for engineering designs.
  • Provide technical expertise and make engineering decisions for Division Engineers.
  • Assist with construction-related engineering and conduct field inspections as necessary.
  • Develop Electric Traction designs including calculations and drawings.
  • Test and commission new and existing facilities.
  • Collaborate with project managers on project progress.
  • Manage in-house and consultant design projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) test.
  • Minimum of six (6) years in design of Substations, Transmission, SCADA, and similar facilities.
  • Familiar with electric generation, transmission, and distribution equipment.
  • Experience in design of Substations, Transmission, SCADA, and similar facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in Relay Protection designs and calculations.
  • Familiarity with standards and codes published by IEEE, AREMA, and NFPA.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and managing large projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated experience of a minimum of eight (8) years in design of Substations, Transmission, SCADA, and similar facilities.
  • Licensed professional engineer (PE).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate.
  • Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
