About the position

As a Senior Engineering Manager in Broker Dealer at Betterment, you will lead a team focused on delivering new features while ensuring system stability and scalability. This role involves mentoring engineers, overseeing backend systems that securely manage financial transactions, and collaborating with various teams to align technical vision with business goals. Responsibilities

  • Lead the team that builds innovative trading, money-movement, and record-keeping technology.
  • Collaborate with Product and Engineering leaders, Operations, Legal & Compliance to ensure proper execution of projects.
  • Help define the technical vision and long-term strategy for the team.
  • Advocate for long-term maintainability and reliability of technology.
  • Participate in technical discussions within the team and organization.
  • Develop deep domain knowledge to effectively partner with stakeholders.
  • Foster career development and align opportunities with the growth interests of direct reports.
  • Maintain a team culture that values accountability and constructive feedback.
  • Balance speed with the importance of correctness and quality in team deliverables.
  • Continuously improve team operations to drive better business results.

Requirements

  • Experience building and scaling distributed and concurrent backend systems using Java or similar languages.
  • Technical proficiency to dive into the codebase and assist the team.
  • Experience managing, mentoring, and inspiring engineers, including managers and senior contributors.
  • Ability to cultivate high-performing teams that execute with precision and speed.
  • Track record of fostering accountability and ownership within a team.
  • Proven ability to close knowledge gaps efficiently to maximize productivity.
  • Effective collaboration skills with engineering teams, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to translate business strategy into engineering initiatives.
  • Adaptable leadership style to meet team needs.
