About the position

The Senior Environmental Health & Safety Engineer at SpaceX is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. This role involves developing and maintaining safety policies, conducting hazard assessments, and monitoring employee exposure to hazards. The engineer will also manage waste, conduct audits, and develop contingency plans to ensure a safe working environment, particularly in the context of SpaceX's mission to enable human life on Mars.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and/or guidelines established by OSHA, NFPA and NIOSH.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to complete job hazard assessments and implement health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Monitor employee exposure to physical and chemical hazards.
  • Understand and implement machine guarding where needed.
  • Develop recommendations for remedial actions when safety policies are not met by employees.
  • Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Complete and maintain documented safety observations from regular hazard identification audits.
  • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries, or occupational diseases to determine root causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety contingency plans (fires, spills, etc.).
  • Review and interpret new and proposed environmental laws and regulations, providing guidance to management.
  • Perform environmental compliance and due diligence audits to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Conduct and monitor the NPDES and other discharge permits/plans.
  • Maintain recordkeeping and compliance requirements for permitted sources defined by the local AQMD.
  • Responsible for hazardous and non-hazardous waste management, including DOT and RCRA compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental, health, and safety disciplines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering with an emphasis in occupational health and safety and/or environmental engineering.
  • Experience in both environmental and safety fields.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining compliance with storm water regulations.
  • Experience with implementing and maintaining compliance with CEQA regulations.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in interpreting, applying, and documenting federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with machine guarding and industrial hygiene programs.
  • Experience with emergency response communication and incident management for hazardous material releases.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).
  • Passion for advancing the commercial and National Security space industry.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a Top-Secret clearance.
