About the position

The Senior Estimator at Ballard Marine Construction will play a crucial role in the company's growth by delivering accurate estimates for various marine and underwater construction projects. This position involves collaborating on bid preparations, negotiating contracts, and providing value engineering solutions while guiding and training other estimating personnel. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in heavy civil and marine construction, with a passion for precision and a commitment to excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Formulates and leads project estimates/proposals to ensure a quality, accurate and timely submission.
  • Develops project work plans, schedules, and submittals.
  • Leads bid kick-off and board review meetings.
  • Performs material take-offs, organizes pre-bid data, researches past costs, and develops construction sequence.
  • Coordinates and cultivates strong business relationships with vendors and sub-contractors.
  • Performs site visits and investigations as needed.
  • Produces pre-bid construction schedules.
  • Attends pre-job job meetings.
  • Conducts constructability studies.
  • Presents estimate quantities, rationale, and scheme to management during bid reviews.
  • Organizes and conducts handoff of project to operations if project awarded.
  • Attends and is an active participant in weekly job progress meetings with operations, accounting, and field staff.
  • Leads project hand-off meetings with key operational staff.
  • Identifies project risks and potential contingencies.
  • Reviews proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and contents of estimate.
  • Performs additional assignments per Management's direction.
  • Collaborates with other Ballard managers to determine win strategies for bids.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, Construction Engineering Management, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • At least ten years of combined construction and estimating experience in heavy civil/marine construction.
  • Working knowledge of standard marine and heavy civil construction practices.
  • Experience in estimating projects with values up to $50 million.
  • Experience working on Joint Venture pursuits is a plus.
  • Experience working on Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract projects is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office Suite, MS Project, P6, and AutoCAD.
  • Strong technical writing skills and ability to contribute to proposal preparation.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while satisfying customer needs and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to proactively identify issues and offer solutions.

Nice-to-haves

  • HCSS Heavy Bid experience is a plus.
