Full-time - Mid Level
Sparks, NV
Transportation Equipment Manufacturing

About the position

As an Industrial Engineer at Tesla, the primary responsibility is to optimize the manufacturing and material flow process by leveraging a detailed understanding of the factory objectives and collaborating with internal and external teams. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the world-class manufacturing facility in Nevada, working in a demanding and fast-paced environment to improve critical subsystems of an exciting product. The Industrial Engineer is responsible for performing work measurement studies on production equipment, conveyance, and human work for operations and engineering stakeholders. This data will be used to optimize gross margin through capacity improvement and streamline operations. Furthermore, the IE will require leading layout and space readiness initiatives for existing line optimization and new line installations, including 2D CAD design, merging new lines and products into existing operations, and expanding the factory footprint. The Industrial Engineer provides high-quality decision support using Excel analysis, discrete event simulation, linear programming, and other operations research methods. The role will require supporting structured problem solving and continuous improvement initiatives, as well as developing business cases for capital expense projects. These efforts will ensure the factory operates at the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness. In summary, the Industrial Engineer at Tesla will play a crucial role in optimizing the manufacturing and material flow process, leading layout and space readiness initiatives, and providing high-quality decision support using various operations research methods.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct work measurement studies for production equipment, conveyance, and human work to optimize operational efficiency and productivity for the engineering stakeholders.
  • Use data to identify value-adding and non-value-adding tasks in operations and streamline processes by providing line-balancing options and eliminating redundant tasks.
  • Conduct capacity studies and static sensitivity analyses to identify factors impacting line throughput (OEE, Headcount, number of material handling equipment) and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Create operating plans for all production lines, including labor requirements, breaking strategies, and shift schedules using linear programming, and assess headcount addition/removal requests based on line needs and requirements.
  • Determine optimal buffer requirements at key nodes in the production process to ensure optimal performance.
  • Provide support for high-level decision-making through statistical hypothesis testing, linear programming, Monte Carlo simulations, and simple excel data analysis.
  • Collaborate with the simulation team to provide key input data for 3-D modeling and occasionally develop discrete event simulation models to gain deeper insight into current and future shop characteristics.
  • Conduct options analysis for existing line optimization and new line installations and estimate resource requirements for factory footprint expansion projects.

Requirements
