About the position

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer - Firewall at Comerica is responsible for managing, designing, and improving the enterprise Checkpoint firewall infrastructure. This role involves collaborating with network architects, leading engineering teams, and providing technical support to ensure the successful implementation of network technologies. The engineer will drive infrastructure modernization projects, support application performance management, and ensure system security and disaster recovery processes are in place.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, design, and improve the enterprise Checkpoint firewall infrastructure.
  • Assist network architects with the design and implementation of network technologies.
  • Provide guiding principles and leadership to engineering teams.
  • Lead the buildout of solutions and drive innovation for incorporating new technologies.
  • Partner with management and engineers to drive infrastructure modernization projects to completion.
  • Provide Level 3 technical support for network-related issues.
  • Utilize infrastructure engineering and research design methodologies appropriate to the development/test/production environment.
  • Design and deploy new applications and enhancements to existing applications, software, and operating systems.
  • Develop automated test solutions and manage scripted code.
  • Perform configuration and maintenance of applications and servers.
  • Support enterprise application performance management, monitoring, and logging solutions.
  • Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and recovery processes.
  • Integrate servers into enterprise systems and ensure system connectivity.
  • Perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems.
  • Test and deploy updates and upgrades to systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve first and second level network and wireless issues.
  • Present recommendations for engineering endpoint solutions.
  • Communicate with engineers, product teams, and management for status updates.
  • Provide orientation and training to end users for modified and new systems.
  • Monitor and test system performance; prepare performance statistics and reports.
  • Ensure all production services are replicated and maintained within a disaster recovery site.
  • Assist during crises and provide on-call support during non-business hours.

Requirements

  • Experience in network design, implementation, and documentation of medium-large scale enterprise networks.
  • Familiarity with datacenter and cloud-based Checkpoint firewall technologies (Checkpoint Gaia, VPN, CloudGuard).
  • Experience with eBGP routing protocol on the Checkpoint platform.
  • Experience with F5 Load balancer clusters (Load balancing, SSL decryption policies, and DNS/GSLB).
  • Familiarity with Infoblox DNS/IPAM functions.
  • Cloud networking experience (AWS, Azure, GCP) with knowledge of on-prem to cloud connectivity solutions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SolarWinds, LiveAction, or LibreNMS monitoring.
  • Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code practices.
