About the position

UFG is seeking a Senior Inland Marine Underwriter to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for pre-qualifying inland marine business, analyzing risk exposures, and leveraging your extensive experience and expertise to make informed underwriting decisions on both new and renewal business. This position is market-facing, focusing on the profitable development and growth of the inland marine product line. You will be tasked with identifying and expanding local and regional partnership channels while developing strong customer relationships through production and marketing calls. Your primary goal will be to drive profitable growth with agents in your assigned territory, which will include underwriting Builder's Risk, Contractors Equipment, Transit, Installation Floaters, and other Inland Marine coverages. As a Senior Underwriter, you will also act as a mentor, providing training and guidance to team members. You will serve as a backup authority for the Inland Marine Underwriting Manager and collaborate with a large team of other underwriters, operations, claims, marketing, and home office management as necessary. We are looking for a highly motivated and results-oriented candidate with solid business and underwriting acumen to excel in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Book of Business - evaluate risk & coverages, information gathering, pricing of a risk, negotiation, and agency relations (50-70%)
  • Conduct thorough account reviews for risk acceptability utilizing UFG's appetite guide, cat modeling, loss experience, loss control reports, etc.
  • Consult management, other underwriters, internet, AM Best guide, and other resources as necessary
  • Review applications, endorsement requests, and renewals for acceptability of risk, coverage, and terms requested
  • Review individual risks for rate adequacy
  • Work with agents and support professionals to obtain a saleable program for the agent/insured while avoiding adverse selection against United Fire Group
  • Achieve territory growth and loss ratio goals
  • Make regular visits to agencies and insureds
  • Partner with marketing to monitor production and loss ratio for each agency and identify problematic trends, providing remediation plans to management when requested
  • Serve as a resource for support professionals, underwriters, supervisors, managers, and various departments in the organization (20-30%)
  • Develop and deliver presentations and provide training on inland marine topics and business unit objectives
  • Review and sign off on file referrals for underwriting staff, conduct file audits, and monitor team performance
  • Coordinate and assist in production, underwriting activities, training, mentoring, and workflow for all teams
  • Monitor and report to underwriting manager underwriting quality, team results, and develop and implement actions as required
  • Back up IM Underwriting Manager in absence for authority referrals
  • Work with Underwriting Manager on maintenance of appetite, guidelines, rates, rules & forms - including analyzing information (10-20%)
  • Provide feedback to management on market trends, agency performance, and competition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; 4-year degree preferred
  • Completion of AU designation
  • Pursuing or willing to pursue CIC, CPCU, and AMIM designations
  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant professional experience, including Inland Marine underwriting experience
  • Commercial Insurance Company, Agency, or Brokerage experience preferred
  • Strong sales and marketing skills
  • Demonstrated successful agency management, including building, maintaining, and managing producer and customer relationships
  • Ability to identify opportunities for growth within new and existing production sources
  • Knowledge of marketing principles, pricing/rate strategies, and their application to attain underwriting profit
  • High degree of proficiency with the underwriting process and solid background in risk analysis
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of customers and collaborate with a team of underwriters, claims, and loss control personnel
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and develop less experienced underwriting staff
  • Knowledge and proficiency with technical issues, compliance, coverage, products, and pricing strategies
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal), collaboration, and building trust with a wide range of colleagues and clients
  • Financial understanding and appetite for learning about the industry, negotiating, and focusing on profitable business.
