About the position

The Sr. Instructional Designer and Writer for Reading Universe is a key role focused on developing multimedia content for a national literacy project aimed at enhancing teacher professional development. This position involves extensive research, writing, and collaboration to create authoritative and engaging online resources for educators teaching reading and writing to children in pre-K through 6th grade. The role requires a deep understanding of literacy research and effective communication skills to convey complex concepts to teachers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop online teacher professional content that is accessible, authoritative, and appealing.
  • Research, write, review, and copy edit content for Reading Universe skill explainers.
  • Consult with members of the national advisory board on reading and writing research.
  • Draft creative briefs for digital assets and print material.
  • Support video production by identifying and preparing schools for in-classroom video.
  • Travel to filming locations to support production and ensure fidelity of reading instruction.
  • Review and comment on rough cuts of in-classroom video.
  • Represent Reading Universe in meetings and public presentations.
  • Monitor blogs, websites, journals, and news articles for new developments in literacy.
  • Ensure Reading Universe meets deadlines and commitments to funders and partners.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of reading research and challenges in pre-K-6 education.
  • Experience in writing and developing literacy curricula.
  • Proven ability to create professional content valued by teachers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Nice-to-haves

  • College degree in the humanities.
  • Masters or doctoral degree in education or related field preferred.
  • Experience with professional development efforts focused on literacy.
  • Published writing experience, especially in reading and elementary education.
  • Teaching experience in grades pre-K through 6.
