About the position

The Senior Instructional Designer at the University of Miami is responsible for planning and implementing engaging learning activities and course content tailored to meet the needs of a specific target audience. This role also involves leading and providing guidance to lower-level instructional designers, ensuring the development of effective instructional materials and methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Work with subject matter experts to conduct needs assessments and identify new development needs.
  • Design and create engaging learning activities and course content that enhances retention and transfer.
  • Identify methodologies for delivering curated content.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies for instructional opportunities.
  • State instructional end goals and create matching content.
  • Visualize instructional graphics, user interfaces, and finished products.
  • Determine aesthetics and context for instructional materials to avoid overwhelming learners.
  • Conduct instructional research and analysis on learners and contexts.
  • Apply instructional design theories, practices, and methods.
  • Provide exercises and activities that enhance the learning process.
  • Create supporting materials such as audio, video, simulations, and games.
  • Develop assessment instruments to judge learner performance.
  • Evaluate instructional effectiveness.
  • Maintain project documentation and course folders.
  • Provide guidance to lower-level instructional designers as needed.
  • Adhere to university policies and safeguard university assets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum Development, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; a combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, reports, and correspondence accurately.
  • Effective communication skills in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in completing assignments.
  • Problem recognition, analysis, and solving skills.
  • Discretion in processing and handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in computer software, including Microsoft Office.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with media design and creation skills.
  • Familiarity with LMS tools and educational technologies.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in instructional design and distance learning.
