About the position

The Sr. IT Technician, also referred to as Principal IT Technician, plays a crucial role in supporting the enterprise network and telecommunications infrastructure at SwRI. This position is primarily focused on the design, administration, and maintenance of video conference rooms and associated technologies. The technician will be responsible for installing and repairing copper and fiber cabling, as well as the physical components of audio-visual equipment. A significant part of the role involves supporting Institute staff with their videoconferencing and multimedia presentation needs, ensuring that all technical and logistical arrangements for meetings are efficiently coordinated. In addition to the installation and repair tasks, the technician will monitor existing audio-visual deployments for any issues or outages, performing necessary repairs or upgrades as required. Collaboration with other IT teams is essential to ensure the delivery of AV and telecom services that meet enterprise requirements. The technician will also be responsible for recommending, purchasing, configuring, and deploying new equipment to maintain the currency of technical capabilities. Documentation and inventory management of systems and equipment are also key responsibilities of this role. The position requires a proactive approach to managing projects, whether independently or as part of a team, and involves hands-on work with copper and fiber optic installation and termination, as well as AV equipment programming.

Responsibilities

  • Design and administer SwRI's video conference rooms and technologies.
  • Install and repair copper/fiber cabling and physical components of audio visual equipment.
  • Support Institute staff with videoconferencing and multimedia presentation meeting needs.
  • Schedule events and make technical and logistical arrangements for videoconferencing.
  • Coordinate and assist with meeting room arrangements and setups.
  • Monitor existing AV deployment for issues and outages.
  • Repair or upgrade AV systems as needed.
  • Collaborate with teams from other IT disciplines to ensure delivery of AV/telecom services.
  • Recommend, purchase, configure and deploy equipment for new requirements.
  • Create and maintain documentation and inventory of systems and equipment.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience in installation, operation, and maintenance of audio visual and multimedia technologies.
  • 5 years of experience in installation of audio visual/network cabling and equipment.
  • 2 years of experience in configuration of control processors, signal processors, touch panels, and other components typical of an automated audio visual system.
  • Experience in installation and termination of copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • IT/AV Project Management experience is required.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.
