About the position

The Senior Vet Tech at Temple University's Lewis Katz School of Medicine will provide high-quality veterinary services to support the research program. This role involves working independently and collaboratively to ensure the health and well-being of research animals, including preventive health care, anesthesia monitoring, and perioperative care. The position also includes instructing research technicians and students, as well as planning and executing research projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide preventive health, anesthesia monitoring, and perioperative care to research animals.
  • Maintain accurate records including SOPs, drug usage, and medical records.
  • Perform pre-, peri-, and post-operative animal care with associated husbandry.
  • Manage drug, supply, and equipment purchases.
  • Set up surgery including disinfection and autoclaving of supplies, equipment, and rooms.
  • Maintain surgery O.R.s, procedure rooms, and prep areas.
  • Ensure proper medical waste disposal and final disposition of animals.
  • Assign fees and charge backs for Veterinary Service Requests.
  • Conduct rodent animal health surveillance and record keeping.
  • Perform non-rodent physical examinations and record keeping.
  • Monitor environmental and equipment conditions, e.g., anesthesia machines.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years' experience as a veterinary technician.
  • Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT, etc.) is highly desired.
  • Experience in anesthesiology and surgical support is highly desired.
  • AALAS certification is preferred.
  • Ability to work on an on-call rotating schedule for weekends and holidays.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with anesthesia monitoring, anesthesia machines, ventilators/respirators, autoclaves, and surgical tools.
  • Ability to work in an environment with laboratory animals that may be infected with biohazardous organisms.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science or veterinary technology.
  • Experience with large animal anesthesia and surgical support.
