About the position

The (Sr./Lead) Engineer in the transmission planning department will play a crucial role in developing the transmission expansion plan for the PJM interconnection. This position involves close collaboration with a skilled team to perform transmission expansion analysis, supporting the Regional Transmission Expansion Plan. The role requires a deep understanding of NERC standards and involves conducting reliability assessments, identifying system reinforcements, and developing innovative analysis methods to enhance the planning process.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with NERC standards applicable to PJM as the Reliability Coordinator, Planning Authority, and Transmission Planner.
  • Perform power system analysis for the development of the baseline Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.
  • Identify and evaluate necessary transmission system reinforcements to resolve reliability and operational constraints.
  • Conduct adequacy and reliability assessments for the PJM system.
  • Develop and maintain transmission system models for the Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.
  • Prepare reports and presentations to support the Transmission Planning Division's activities.
  • Develop recommendations for PJM management regarding new bulk power facilities, programs, procedures, and policies.
  • Collaborate with transmission owner staff to refine the Regional Transmission Expansion Plan.
  • Work with other members of the System Planning Division to address complex engineering problems.
  • Represent PJM on industry committees and stakeholder groups related to planning and engineering.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience with PJM (or similar ISO/RTO) reliability criteria testing methodologies.
  • At least 5 years of experience in programming development of analytical and automation tools for reliability criteria testing.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail.
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions.
  • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program).
