About the position

The Sr Lead Site Reliability Engineer - Network at Lumen is responsible for operating the company's Network as a Service (NaaS) implementation, collaborating with traditional operations teams and development counterparts. This role involves providing technical direction, resolving systemic issues, and ensuring system performance across various network topologies and applications. The engineer will develop tools for automation and monitoring, ensuring the effective operation of applications and services while minimizing downtime and enhancing operational readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for network automation platform applications, services, and hosting environments.
  • Collaborate in the development of new tools and capabilities to improve support processes and efficiency.
  • Ensure applications/services are continuously monitored and running effectively, empowering operations and development teams.
  • Automate deployment pipelines (CI/CD) and infrastructure provisioning to ensure seamless performance of new deployments.
  • Manage incidents proactively, investigating and resolving service outages and minimizing recurrence.
  • Lead blameless retrospectives after incidents to analyze failures and implement improvements.
  • Document knowledge bases and operational workflows to ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Coach and mentor team members on business processes and workflows to resolve support issues.
  • Manage multiple initiatives in parallel while maintaining ownership of key responsibilities.
  • Influence the work of others to drive production readiness and operationalization of system components.
  • Estimate task completion times and ensure work is delivered within those timeframes.
  • Scale solutions to meet enhanced requirements for growth and network optimization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of related experience in software development, systems engineering, and/or networking.
  • Strong network skills with a preference for previous network architecture/engineering/operations experience.
  • Deep understanding of network technologies including Internet, Ethernet, IPVPN, Edge Compute, and Optical transport.
  • Strong Layer 2 knowledge of Ethernet switching equipment and architectures used on Lumen's networks.
  • Experience with protocols and standards such as BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, BFD, LLDP, RPKI, BMP.
  • Proficiency in Ansible, Python, and other technologies used in network automation.
  • Working knowledge of asynchronous programming concepts and distributed systems design.
  • Familiarity with source code repositories and CI/CD practices.
  • Experience with zero downtime deployment strategies and high availability architectures.
