About the position

As a Senior Manager in Control Management, Risk Identification & Assessment at American Express, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that control management is seamlessly integrated into the daily operations of the organization. This position is part of the U.S. Consumer Services (USCS) Control Management Risk ID & Assessment team, which is dedicated to identifying risks across various business processes, systems, and platforms. Your primary objective will be to develop and recommend effective risk mitigation strategies to address identified risks and proactively highlight high-risk themes that require intervention and enhancement of controls. In this role, you will collaborate extensively with multiple partners across various business units and functional areas. You will be responsible for facilitating risk assessments, including Process Self Risk Assessments (PRSAs), and ensuring that these assessments meet both regulatory and internal standards. This will involve managing control monitoring activities, compiling key operational risk trends, and reporting these insights to senior management to support informed decision-making. Additionally, you will manage the categorization of controls and map them against associated risks and processes. Your expertise will be crucial in advising business units on risk identification and in spotting areas where product changes or improved controls may be necessary, particularly within the New Product Governance (NPG) framework. You will also support the sharing of insights and best practices across the enterprise, contributing to a culture of continuous improvement in risk management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide additional identification of risks throughout business processes and systems in collaboration with business process owners.
  • Facilitate Business Units in their risk assessments performance, including Process Self Risk Assessments (PRSAs) and periodic reviews.
  • Manage control monitoring and compile key operational risk trends and activities for senior management.
  • Manage the categorization of controls and map them against risks and processes.
  • Advise Business Units on risk identification and areas for product changes or improved controls within New Product Governance (NPG).
  • Support risk management practices within the business and share insights across the enterprise.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in operational risk management, preferably within a Risk and/or Internal Audit function.
  • Understanding of critical operational risk management lifecycle activities.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies and regulatory frameworks.
  • Robust analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze data and evaluate risk scenarios effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications are advantageous.
  • Experience in identifying operational risks throughout business processes and systems.
  • Experience in facilitating risk assessment performance and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Experience in enhancing risk assessments and associated methodologies.
  • Experience in managing independent control monitoring and thematic risk reporting.
