About the position

The Sr Manager, Data Platform Automation at Blue Origin is responsible for leading a team that develops and manages the data platform to support decision-making across the company. This role emphasizes the integration and functionality of operational and analytical data platforms, ensuring they align with the company's mission of safe and repeatable space flight. The position requires a technical leader who can mentor a team of Data Engineers and DevOps Engineers while collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance data capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor an experienced team of Data Engineers and DevOps Engineers to build, integrate and scale a multi-layer, enterprise-wide data processing and management platform.
  • Build and scale the data lakehouse architecture to accommodate more users and diverse use cases.
  • Collaborate with practitioners and customers to develop new methods for federating analysis and operational application development.
  • Define and manage incident management, customer communications, root cause analyses, and implement mitigation strategies for platform outages.
  • Conduct make vs buy decisions for new technology and perform vendor assessments to enhance the platform.
  • Serve as a center of excellence for data engineering and data operations practices at Blue Origin.
  • Work with Data Governance and Cyber Security to ensure secure and ethical implementation of data models.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on platform performance, identifying areas for improvement and making data-driven decisions.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience writing production-grade code in a modern programming language.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.
  • Experience building part of a modern data lakehouse stack, from design to production code.
  • Experience hiring top talent and driving career growth for early-in-career and senior engineers.
  • Ability to set ambitious goals with measurable results and familiarity with frameworks such as OKRs.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex, large-scale projects.
  • Experience working with product managers to collaboratively set a vision.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Deep technical knowledge about one or more of Spark, Databricks, Palantir, ML Flow or similar technologies.
  • Clear understanding of the software development lifecycle from reviewing requirements to debugging sophisticated systems in production.
  • Experience maintaining and operating always-on cloud services.
  • Comfortable diving into the code with your team when necessary.
  • Experience with AWS, data engineering, data modeling and data quality.
  • Experience working with APIs and cloud-based data platform implementations including observability & monitoring, data cataloging, metadata management and security & governance.
  • Ability to lead product roll-out process from conception through final operationalization.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
