About the position

Berkley Accident and Health is seeking a Sr. Manager, Databases and Reporting to join our Information Technology department. This newly created role is essential for addressing the challenges related to the consistency, reliability, security, and accuracy of our databases and reporting solutions. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for transforming ambiguity into structured processes and will have a keen eye for detail. This position will be based in our Hamilton, NJ office, requiring four days in the office and one day remote work each week. In this role, you will lead a team of three data analysts and engineers, driving the definition, execution, and delivery of a strategic roadmap focused on data analytics and reporting. You will collaborate closely with the AVP of Information Technology to assess the current state of our IT catalog, which includes existing databases, ETL solutions, and reports. Your leadership will be crucial in building and executing a roadmap that aligns with our desired future state. Key responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day work assignments for your team, ensuring a balance between project work and operational tasks. You will also be responsible for the design and deployment of MS SQL Server databases, including the development and optimization of table relationships and indexes, as well as implementing field-level encryption to protect sensitive data. Additionally, you will strengthen our data infrastructure while reducing legacy technical debt, ensuring that solution requirements are well documented and that formal change control procedures are adhered to prior to deployment. You will create and maintain ETL packages using MS SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and manage the ETL processes to ensure data quality and availability. Your role will also involve translating business requirements into effective visualizations and reports, troubleshooting data-related issues, and maintaining technical documentation and end-user job aids. Your ability to perform root-cause analysis and resolve data reporting issues promptly will be vital to the success of this position.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and inspire a team of three data analysts/engineers.
  • Drive the definition, execution, and delivery of a strategic roadmap for data analytics and reporting.
  • Assess the current state of IT's catalog of databases, ETL solutions, and reports.
  • Build and execute a roadmap to achieve the desired future state of data management.
  • Direct day-to-day work assignments for the team, balancing project assignments and operational tasks.
  • Perform design and deployment activities for MS SQL Server databases.
  • Develop and tune table relationships and indexes, standardizing naming conventions.
  • Implement field-level encryption/decryption for personal information (PI) and personal health information (PHI).
  • Strengthen the data infrastructure foundation and reduce legacy technical debt.
  • Document solution requirements and follow formal change control procedures prior to deployment.
  • Create and maintain ETL packages using MS SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
  • Manage role-based permissions for databases and reports.
  • Build and manage ETL processes to ensure data quality and availability.
  • Translate business requirements into visualizations and reporting.
  • Perform data analysis to troubleshoot data-related issues and assist in their resolution.
  • Document work and update technical documentation and end-user job aids.
  • Assist stakeholders with data-related technical issues.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and resolve data reporting issues in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Business, or a similar field; or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting database and reporting solutions.
  • 5+ years of experience directly supervising teams of 3-5 employees/contractors.
  • Significant experience with Microsoft SQL Server, Structured Query Language (SQL), and Transact-SQL (T-SQL).
  • Significant experience with Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
  • Significant experience with Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and Microsoft Excel.
