The Senior Engineering Manager, Software Engineering, is responsible for leading and directing a team of experienced professionals and lower-level supervisors within a group of software engineers tasked with developing complex engineering solutions. This role requires extensive knowledge of Embedded Software Engineering and the associated principles of software development and testing. The Senior Engineering Manager provides technical guidance and leadership to subordinate engineers, ensuring that proper staffing levels and expertise are maintained to meet business objectives. In this position, the manager develops and conducts programs in accordance with the company's policies, priorities, and budget constraints. They are responsible for managing and developing budgets for the assigned function or department, which includes operating requirements, training, equipment, and material purchases. The Senior Engineering Manager also provides technical oversight and assistance to other departments as required, making significant improvements in processes, systems, or products. The role involves managing the implementation of technical strategy and establishing short-term operational plans that contribute measurably to the function or area results. The Senior Engineering Manager accomplishes results through subordinate supervisors or exempt specialist employees and is subject to approval for modifying the organizational structure of centralized functions and units. They meet functional requirements related to staffing, training, talent development, engagement, retention, and overall management of the department. Additionally, the Senior Engineering Manager is responsible for the technical execution, staffing, and oversight of all programs/projects assigned to the organizational unit. They act as an advisor to subordinate supervisors or staff members to meet schedules and resolve technical or operational problems. This position requires frequent contact with equivalent level managers and customer representatives concerning projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements, contractual clarifications, and talent development. The manager works to influence others to accept the job function's views or practices and to agree to new concepts, practices, and approaches. The role also requires the ability to communicate with executive leadership regarding matters of significant importance to the organization. The Senior Engineering Manager collaborates with Business Development, Program Management, and Business Leadership to provide input for Strategic Planning, Research and Development Planning, and Inter-Corporation Resource Sharing. Staying abreast of state-of-the-art technology is crucial, as is the ability to identify disruptive or emerging technology trends for inclusion in Internal Research and Development (IRAD) or pursuit/program engineering change proposal opportunities. The manager must enable teams to resolve issues across programs and drive innovative solutions while solving execution and technical challenges on time and within budget.
