About the position

The Sr. Manager of Gift & Endowment Accounting at the University of Delaware is responsible for overseeing the accounting and reporting processes related to the University's gifts and endowments. This role involves ensuring compliance with GAAP and university policies, managing financial transactions, and providing guidance to other departments. The position requires strong leadership skills to supervise a team and collaborate with various stakeholders, including the Chief Investment Officer and external auditors.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper recording of assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses related to the University's gifts and endowments in compliance with GAAP.
  • Oversee the accounting processes, including reconciliations, analysis, and approval of entries to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Review and approve the recording and reporting of all investment activity for the University's endowment and operating investments.
  • Communicate with custodial banks to improve accounting processes and resolve discrepancies.
  • Supervise the preparation of endowment payout and investment expense projections.
  • Review models of endowment income projections using multiple variables and assumptions.
  • Oversee the preparation and completion of all endowment/investment related surveys.
  • Communicate with University Development Office regarding new endowment gifts and changes to investment activity.
  • Track and report Net Assets with Donor Restrictions.
  • Prepare and oversee preparation of investments and gifts workpapers for audits.
  • Interact with the University's external auditors as a primary point of contact.
  • Oversee annual statement and footnote preparation for the State of Delaware appropriations.
  • Utilize reporting tools to report on fiscal year activity and identify opportunities for efficiency.
  • Oversee the implementation of Fundriver endowment accounting software.
  • Directly supervise a team that supports areas of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field; master's preferred.
  • Minimum of six years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Higher education and/or not-for-profit accounting experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in analyzing and interpreting financial statements, data, and metrics.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with major financial systems, including advanced query and report development; knowledge of PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Strong reasoning ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with others.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload and delegate tasks.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in higher education accounting or not-for-profit accounting.
  • Familiarity with Fundriver endowment accounting software.
