About the position

The Manager/Sr. Manager, Medical Communications (S/MMC) plays a crucial role in supporting the development and execution of publication strategies and plans within the therapeutic areas (TAs) assigned. This position is responsible for managing the delivery of medical and scientific publication activities, ensuring that all communications are of high quality and aligned with the overall objectives of the department. The S/MMC will leverage their expertise to enhance the quality of business decisions and contribute to external communications activities, collaborating with external authors, agencies, and consultants as necessary. In this role, the S/MMC will oversee multiple publication plans across various products or indications, coordinating cross-functional teams to develop medical publications and strategies for scientific congresses. A key aspect of the position involves understanding and interpreting clinical trial data and literature related to the therapeutic conditions, which is essential for effective communication. The S/MMC will also be accountable for maintaining publication records and ensuring compliance with industry guidelines, including ICMJE and GPP. The successful candidate will establish and maintain relationships with external experts, clinical trial investigators, and journal editors to facilitate high-quality medical communications. They will also be responsible for developing and managing publication advisory boards, forecasting financial resources, and ensuring that publication plans are executed within budget. Effective vendor management skills are necessary to integrate medical communications agencies and freelancers into the team, ensuring that all activities meet the required standards of quality and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development, maintenance, and implementation of medical communication strategy, plans, and tactics in the assigned therapeutic area(s).
  • Manage relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate cross-functional publication strategy and core teams in the development of medical publications and scientific congress strategy and plans.
  • Ensure execution of publication plans is consistent with department objectives and TA strategy.
  • Oversee publication records in the publication tracking tool.
  • Input into key medical/scientific communications concepts and terminology development.
  • Deliver high quality, message-focused medical communications to target audiences in a timely manner.
  • Establish and leverage relationships with external experts, clinical trial investigators, journal editors, and congress secretariats.
  • Develop and maintain publication advisory boards for assigned therapeutic areas, including recruitment of advisors and meeting planning.
  • Forecast financial resources and prepare business cases to deliver publication plans within budget.
  • Manage vendor relationships and integrate medical communications agencies/contract freelancers into the team.
  • Ensure compliance of medical/scientific communications activities with industry standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or Communications degree required; advanced scientific degree preferred (MD, PhD, PharmD).
  • 3 years of experience in Industry with relevant medical/scientific focus required; 5 years preferred.
  • Knowledge of Good Publication Practices and ICMJE Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Global Medical Affairs in the Pharmaceutical/Biotech Industry.
  • Proven track record of establishing strong partnerships with senior stakeholders.
  • Project management skills and financial acumen.
  • Experience managing publication projects via publication tracking database (i.e. Datavision, PubStrat).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Strong client engagement and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to influence and work with cross-functional teams to deliver complex projects.
  • Experience with Medical Affairs and Medical/Scientific Communication practices and processes.
