About the position

The Sr Manager, Operational Data Enablement at Blue Origin is responsible for leading a team that enhances the use of data in decision-making across the organization. This role focuses on developing and implementing data products that connect various operational domains, ensuring safe and efficient human spaceflight. The position requires a blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to quality, all aimed at supporting Blue Origin's mission of enabling millions of people to live and work in space.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor an experienced team of Data Engineers and Software Developers to build, integrate and scale operational data products.
  • Build and scale the operational data platform to accommodate more users and diverse applications.
  • Collaborate with practitioners and customers to develop new methods for federating analysis and operational application development.
  • Define and manage incident management, customer communications, and implement mitigation strategies for data products.
  • Operate the enterprise data lakehouse to support business analytics, data science, and ad-hoc analysis.
  • Serve as a center of excellence for data engineering and data operations practices at Blue Origin.
  • Work with Data Governance and Cyber Security to ensure secure and ethical implementation of data models.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on platform performance, identifying areas for improvement.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience writing production-grade code in a modern programming language.
  • 3+ years of people management experience.
  • Experience building part of a modern data lakehouse stack from design to production code.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex, large-scale projects.
  • Experience working with product managers to collaboratively set a vision.
  • Deep technical knowledge of Spark, Databricks, Palantir, ML Flow, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with AWS, data engineering, data modeling, and data quality.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience hiring top talent and driving career growth for engineers.
  • Familiarity with frameworks such as OKRs.
  • Comfortable diving into the code with your team when necessary.
  • Experience with APIs and cloud-based data platform implementations.
