About the position

As a Senior Manager of Software Engineering at Henry Schein One, you will lead a newly formed team within our engineering group, which is responsible for the largest dental practice platform in the world. This role involves overseeing the services utilized by dental practices across the United States, both directly and through dental service organizations. Your team will be tasked with maintaining existing software and developing new services using a microservice architecture, employing event sourcing to store all dental practice information in the cloud. In this position, you will thrive in an environment that emphasizes asynchronous communication, requiring excellent written communication skills to foster working relationships with colleagues globally. Your leadership will be pivotal in guiding your team, providing support, and offering advice. You will be expected to cultivate an environment where team members feel empowered, take ownership of their work, and develop a strong sense of belonging. Your responsibilities will include regular one-on-one meetings with team members, ensuring a shared understanding of decision-making processes, and demonstrating proficiency in encouraging personal development. You will oversee staffing matters, including hiring, performance management, and pay reviews, in collaboration with senior management. Additionally, you will communicate the status of personnel, products, and projects through clear and concise reports and metrics to all stakeholders, while also managing project-level budget forecasts in accordance with established budgets. This role is not just about managing projects; it’s about leading a team to success and ensuring that all personnel are committed to quality, have healthy work relationships, and understand their career progression. You will also communicate the future direction of products and departments to team members and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with the company’s mission and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Encourage personal development and help team members understand the importance of their role in fulfilling the mission of the organization.
  • Ensure all personnel are committed to quality, have healthy work relationships, and have a clear understanding of their career progression.
  • Oversee staffing regarding hiring, dismissals, performance management, and pay reviews in collaboration with senior management.
  • Communicate status of personnel, products, and projects with clear, concise reports and metrics to all stakeholders.
  • Provide project-level budget forecasts and manage in accordance with established budget.
  • Communicate product and department future direction to team members and other stakeholders in collaboration with senior management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management or a related field or equivalent professional working experience.
  • 10+ years of increasing responsibility and complexity in agile software development.
  • 3+ years of experience managing distributed and remote teams of full-time employees and contractors.
  • Prior experience leading cross functional teams building microservices and following CI/CD best practices that improve DORA metrics.
  • Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills.
  • Experience building and operating microservices at global scale utilizing event sourced architecture.
