About the position

GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineering Manager to lead a team focused on building high-performance, low-latency platforms and applications. This role is pivotal in driving the transformation of the insurance business by redefining customer experiences through innovative engineering solutions. The Senior Staff Engineering Manager will define strategies, execute technical roadmaps, and enhance existing solutions to solve critical operational problems.

Responsibilities

  • Work with your Director to address project dependencies and deliver projects on time.
  • Identify and raise appropriate project risks, presenting detailed and implementable solutions.
  • Report on your team's progress for project metrics and suggest areas for improvement.
  • Understand how requirements and design choices impact systems across multiple areas.
  • Initiate and support performance evaluations of team members.
  • Cultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher achievement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with team members to support an environment of trust.
  • Collaborate with product teams to address performance and resiliency issues.
  • Contribute as a hands-on technical leader to architecture and system design.
  • Identify technical skill gaps and craft plans to remediate them.

Requirements

  • Fluency with C#/ .NET, HTML-5, JavaScript/TypeScript, XML, JSON, RESTful Web Services, and Event Driven Architectures.
  • Fluency with at least one additional modern language such as Java, Python, or GO.
  • Ability to be hands-on developing software at least 10-20% of the time.
  • Strong knowledge of system design, architecture, and full lifecycle of core services and APIs.
  • Passionate about testing (unit, integration, functional, performance, etc.).
  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts.
  • Experience implementing RESTful and GRPC services, event-driven architecture, and micro-services.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing technologies (SaaS/PaaS/IaaS) and platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments.
  • Understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases.
