Full-time - Senior
Kirkland, WA

About the position

Project Kuiper is an initiative aimed at increasing global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). The mission of Project Kuiper is to provide fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities worldwide, thereby helping to close the digital divide. This initiative will cater to a diverse range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and organizations operating in areas lacking reliable connectivity. We are looking for a talented Senior Manufacturing Engineer to lead, develop, and scale the production of Kuiper Satellites. This role is crucial as it supports split shift and weekend operations for the Kuiper Integration team, driving essential build and test operations across more than five different assembly lines. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for coordinating and troubleshooting key production activities, planning and executing build and test campaigns, and collaborating with various teams to ensure the successful integration of satellites. In this position, the Senior Manufacturing Engineer will work closely with test, design, operations, tooling, quality, and enterprise teams on both first-article hardware development and production hardware integration processes and systems. This role is critical in supporting production and development flexibly as we transition from research and development to production operations. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in supporting programs through full development cycles of space hardware, including qualification test procedures (QTP) and acceptance test procedures (ATP) for flight hardware. Additionally, the candidate will lead long-term production planning and rate scaling, provide technical reviews of designs and manufacturing decisions, and develop the technical and leadership skills of the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coordinate and troubleshoot key production operation activities Wednesday through Sunday on split shift support.
  • Plan and execute key flight and non-flight build and test campaigns to support broader Kuiper program milestones.
  • Coordinate with Kuiper program leadership, production leads, test engineers and other manufacturing engineers to plan and coordinate daily satellite integration tasks for the operations team.
  • Review and lead definition of the assembly line and equipment needed for satellite integration.
  • Work with the vehicle test team to establish proper testing procedures, protocols and automated test definition of the Kuiper satellite.
  • Interface with facilities personnel on building development and requirements.
  • Optimize cost and the assembly line to meet aggressive build rates and overall budget targets.
  • Define standards, requirements and processes for manufacturing systems, work instructions and troubleshooting of complex space hardware.
  • Provide frequent feedback and technical reviews on designs, processes, tools and custom equipment used in both R&D prototyping and production environments.
  • Assist with hiring and training the technician team and manufacturing engineering team, specifically on new processes, procedures and designs.
  • Improve and enforce area safety through design reviews, processes reviews, regular auditing and safety-related projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Manufacturing/Mechanical/Aerospace/Industrial/Electrical) or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in the development, planning and standing up of manufacturing operations for automotive, medical device or space hardware.
  • Able to work Wednesday through Sunday on split shift from Noon - 8pm.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience leading manufacturing engineering teams, processes, facilities and systems in an R&D and/or production environment.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical and/or propulsion systems.
  • Experience with various automated manufacturing processes, including assembly and test methods at component level, subsystem, and system level.
  • Highly familiar with QTP/ATP and production test methods, and automated data acquisition and collection.
  • Formal training/certification in Operational Excellence Systems (Lean, 5S, Six Sigma, etc.) a plus.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, root cause analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • CAD experience (NX), PFMEA experience, GD&T knowledge.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, financial, and other benefits package.
  • Equity and sign-on payments may be provided as part of total compensation package.
