About the position

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Co. will play a crucial role in providing process engineering support at a zirconium manufacturing facility, specifically tailored for the commercial nuclear power industry. This position involves working with a diverse array of equipment utilized in chemical and metals manufacturing, including but not limited to chemical processing systems such as separators and fluidized bed reactors, vacuum arc furnaces, electron beam furnaces, and various types of lathes and furnaces. The engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all equipment and processes meet the stringent safety and regulatory requirements necessary for the industry. In this role, the engineer will provide direct technical support and leadership for manufacturing and chemical operations on a day-to-day basis. This includes taking the lead on one or more major manufacturing programs, overseeing system performance, and specifying new processes and designs. The engineer will also be tasked with the development, installation, and qualification of new products and processes, ensuring that all modifications comply with safety standards. The position requires a strong analytical approach to identify and resolve failures in systems, as well as the ability to recommend technological innovations that can enhance manufacturing processes. The engineer will perform engineering calculations to support equipment and process designs, including Finite Element Analyses using software tools like ANSYS. Additionally, the role involves identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities to enhance yield, first-time throughput (FTT), process safety, and overall productivity. The engineer will also be responsible for addressing customer and regulatory requirements, preparing technical papers, and making formal presentations to stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct technical engineering support and leadership for manufacturing and chemical operations and maintenance.
  • Assume lead technical responsibility for development and administration of major manufacturing programs, systems, or activities.
  • Monitor system performance and specify new processes and designs.
  • Oversee and coordinate installation, fabrication, testing, and qualification of new equipment or processes.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Apply engineering analytical skills to identify causes of failures in systems and recommend resolutions.
  • Analyze and recommend utilization of technological innovations in material, machinery, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Perform engineering calculations to support equipment and process designs, including Finite Element Analyses using ANSYS.
  • Identify and implement process improvement opportunities to improve yield, FTT, process safety, and productivity.
  • Address customer and regulatory requirements and concerns, preparing technical papers and making formal presentations.
  • Analyze and propose new business opportunities and implement strategic plans.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Metallurgy.
  • Minimum 5-10 years of experience in a manufacturing or chemical plant.
  • Working knowledge of ASME and industry codes.
  • Strong teamwork skills, including leadership and participation.
  • Clear, concise, and convincing oral and written communication skills.
  • Critical presentation skills to influence desired outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically to drive improvements in the business and resolve customer or product issues.
