About the position

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in Structures and Drive Systems for the Tesla Semi, you will be part of a dynamic and fast-paced team dedicated to the design and development of heavy-duty transmission systems. This role involves a high level of leadership and contribution to the architecture and design of semi-truck components, particularly focusing on mass-efficient castings and forgings such as gearboxes and motor housings. You will collaborate closely with various teams, including vehicle integration and production line teams, to ensure that the designs are not only innovative but also practical for assembly and service within the greater vehicle context. Your responsibilities will include working with reliability teams to diagnose and improve designs based on testing results and field issues. You will be expected to develop designs with a strong emphasis on design for assembly at volume, collaborating with the Manufacturing Engineering team to ensure that the designs can be efficiently produced. You will own the detail design of individual components, guiding them from initial concept through to sourcing collaboration and first parts inspection. Additionally, you will work with analysis and test teams to define specifications and guide fixture design for testing, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and meet all necessary standards. This position requires a deep understanding of heavy-duty/Class 8 transmission design, particularly with a focus on structural castings. You will need to demonstrate system-level design ownership and possess strong 3D modeling skills, preferably with Catia V5. Your experience should include casting design for volume production, as well as detailed 3D and 2D release of iron and aluminum castings, forgings, and molded parts. You will also need to have experience in component and sub-system level structural CAE, working alongside CAE specialists for complex analyses. Attention to detail, a strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), and excellent time management skills are essential for success in this role.
