About the position

The Senior Medical Lab Scientist (Sr. MLS) plays a crucial role in overseeing all diagnostic tests conducted in the medical laboratory, ensuring that the results are valid and accurate for use in diagnosing and treating diseases. This position requires adherence to all relevant federal and state accreditation standards while providing a high-quality, consumer-centric experience. The Sr. MLS will work closely with the Health First laboratory leadership team to maintain the integrity and efficiency of laboratory operations. In this role, the Sr. MLS will perform oversight tasks on clinical laboratory testing of various complexities, ensuring compliance with Health First policies and procedures as well as federal and state regulations. Responsibilities include daily oversight of clinical chemistry, toxicology, transfusion services, urinalysis, hemostasis, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and point of care testing, as assigned by lab leadership. The Sr. MLS will also be responsible for quality control tasks, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory tests and equipment, ensuring the accuracy and validity of results. The position requires a commitment to continuous quality improvement, utilizing evidence-based medicine and benchmarking to implement recommended guidelines. The Sr. MLS will manage various electronic medical record (EMR) applications, ensuring departmental competency and providing actionable recommendations to laboratory leadership based on data analysis and research. Effective communication with laboratory staff, external clinical departments, and other healthcare professionals is essential, as is the ability to report departmental needs and issues to supervisors. Additionally, the Sr. MLS will assist in maintaining a comprehensive quality control and assurance program, coordinating accreditation inspections, and implementing corrective actions as necessary. The role may also involve serving as the lab's Safety Officer and performing other healthcare operations duties as delegated by laboratory or Health First leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Perform oversight tasks on all clinical laboratory testing of various complexities in compliance with HF policies and procedures.
  • Provide daily oversight of clinical chemistry, toxicology, transfusion services, urinalysis, hemostasis, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and point of care as assigned by lab leadership.
  • Assign quality control tasks and perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory tests and equipment.
  • Assist lab supervisor in validating new tests, equipment, or methodology.
  • Coordinate and assist with all instruments, processes, correlations, test method verification, and validation studies.
  • Provide accurate and timely information and written communication to facilitate and complete projects.
  • Incorporate continuous quality improvement through evidence-based medicine and benchmarking.
  • Manage various electronic medical record (EMR) applications and ensure departmental competency of EMR users.
  • Perform data analysis and provide lab leadership with summaries and recommendations based on data.
  • Communicate effectively within the laboratory and with external clinical departments and healthcare professionals.
  • Assist laboratory leadership in maintaining a comprehensive quality control and assurance program.
  • Coordinate accreditation inspections and submit corrective action responses and root-cause analyses.
  • Comply with HF I-CARE values and demonstrate effective communication with co-workers and management.
  • Meet laboratory staffing demands as assigned by supervisor and may be appointed as lab's Safety Officer.
  • Perform other duties related to healthcare operations as delegated by laboratory or Health First leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field as outlined by CLIA.
  • Medical Technologist licensure by State of Florida in accordance with CLIA.
  • Two years of experience as MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), MT (AAB), or MT (AMT).
  • Must pass color blindness test.
  • Proficient in required computer applications.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Strong critical thinking, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English.

Nice-to-haves

  • Lab Supervisor's License through State of Florida.
  • MLS(ASCP) certification, formerly known as MT(ASCP), MT (AAB), MT (AMT).
  • Specialist Certification by ASCP (SBB, SC, SH, SM, etc.).
  • Five years of experience as a Medical Lab Scientist.
