About the position

Raytheon is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Section Manager to lead a highly motivated team of Mechanical Engineers in the Electronic Warfare (EW) Mechanical Engineering Subsystems Design section within the Mechanical Optical Performance Analysis and Electronic Warfare (MOPA&EW) Department. The section specializes in the design, integration, verification, and production of digital processor and RF receiver subsystems for airborne platforms. The candidate oversees the mechanical engineering discipline supporting a variety of programs in Goleta, California. Key interfaces will be with other sections across the Department, other Engineering disciplines, as well as internal customers leading the supporting programs. The Section Manager (SM) is a key technical contributor to the programs and products supported by the section. The SM performs direct line management activities for approximately 15 - 20 engineers. In addition to designing mechanical subsystems and participating in Bid and Proposal efforts, SM activities include career and performance development, mentoring, training, tool and process development, resource allocation, and championing the use of established procedures, processes and instructions. The SM serves as a liaison to the programs, ensuring program success along technical, cost and schedule parameters, as well as overseeing section member job assignments, performance, and recognition. This role also requires the candidate to possess working knowledge of electronics packaging design and manufacturing. This knowledge set includes, but is not limited to, thermal and structural design and analysis, electrical component design, construction and failure modes, printed wiring board and circuit card assembly processes and best practices, surface mount installation processes and failure modes, metal fabrication and finishing methods, RF isolation mechanical design, and environmental test methods and equipment. Candidate will also have working knowledge of electronics/processor systems design and development utilizing COTS/MOTS components and products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of approximately 15 - 20 mechanical engineers.
  • Oversee the design, integration, verification, and production of digital processor and RF receiver subsystems for airborne platforms.
  • Perform direct line management activities including career and performance development, mentoring, and training.
  • Participate in Bid and Proposal efforts for new projects.
  • Champion the use of established procedures, processes, and instructions within the team.
  • Serve as a liaison to programs, ensuring success along technical, cost, and schedule parameters.
  • Oversee section member job assignments, performance, and recognition.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
  • 8 years' experience with Mechanical Design, Development, and/or Implementation of Defense related Electronic Systems OR 5 years with an advanced degree.
  • Experience executing root cause analysis and developing effective corrective actions.
  • Experience interfacing and communicating with customers regarding assessments of program performance.
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and ASME drawing and documentation standards.
  • Previous experience as a leader of a technical team including Integrated Product Team Lead (IPTL), Mechanical or Hardware Lead.
  • Broad based mechanical engineering experience spanning the entire product development lifecycle.
  • Experience with solid modeling and creating mechanical designs in Pro/Engineer/CREO or similar tools.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with EW/Radar Systems and products.
  • Experience with managing budget and schedule (Earned Value Management).
  • Previous experience as a technical manager or leader of a technical team.
  • Experience with printed wiring board designs and routing.
  • Experience with structural and thermal analysis using FEA modeling techniques.
