About the position

The Sr Network Engineer position is a critical role within the Southern Linc datacenters, focusing on the design and operation of core IP network infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for blending their expertise in IP network and telecom engineering to effectively plan, purchase, install, and maintain mission-critical network equipment. This role emphasizes the importance of Southern Linc's 4G LTE packet cores, requiring a deep understanding of both the technical and operational aspects of network management. In this position, the engineer will work closely with a dedicated team responsible for maintaining the network equipment housed in the core datacenters. This includes a variety of essential hardware such as datacenter switches, routers, firewalls, and proprietary telecommunications equipment. The role will also involve the development and enforcement of installation and operational standards, particularly in relation to cybersecurity best practices, ensuring that the network infrastructure remains secure and efficient. The engineer will be expected to interact with various personnel and systems for monitoring and troubleshooting network issues, making strong communication and collaboration skills essential. The ability to innovate and react quickly to changing circumstances will be crucial, as will the capacity to work independently on complex projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design and operate core IP network infrastructure within Southern Linc datacenters.
  • Plan, purchase, install, and maintain mission-critical network equipment.
  • Maintain network equipment installed in core datacenters, including switches, routers, and firewalls.
  • Develop and enforce installation and operational standards, focusing on cybersecurity best practices.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot network issues, interacting with personnel and systems as needed.

Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of network fundamentals and protocols, including OSI model, Ethernet, IP, TCP/UDP, OSPF, BGP, IPSec.
  • 4 years of experience maintaining IP routing and switching equipment, preferably Cisco.
  • 2 years of experience working with vendors to design solutions and install networking systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of firewalls and understanding of stateful inspection.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills, including root-cause analysis of network issues.
  • Experience with Syslog, SNMP, or other network monitoring protocols and tools.
  • Proficiency with network traffic analysis tools such as Wireshark.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, project management, and meeting facilitation skills.
  • Ability to innovate, react quickly, and work independently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Cisco certification (CCNA, CCNP, etc.)
  • Understanding of firewall policy management, preferably Palo Alto.
  • Experience with software-defined networking (SDN) solutions and concepts, preferably Arista CCF.
  • Experience with Client and NSX-T virtualization.
  • Experience with LTE cellular technology, signaling, and best practices.
  • Experience with carrier network deployments or traffic engineering, specifically MPLS.
  • Understanding of intrusion prevention or similar technologies.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices.
