About the position

As a Sr. Operations Engineer at Amazon, you will take on a pivotal role in leading and managing the lifecycle of complex cross-functional projects aimed at developing and delivering cutting-edge automation and material handling solutions. Your focus will be on ensuring that the facility network infrastructure is effectively planned and implemented, which includes overseeing new builds, retrofits, expansions, and various program initiatives. You will be a customer-obsessed leader, working closely with internal customers and both internal and external stakeholders to foster collaboration and ensure timely project handovers. In this position, you will collaborate with some of the most talented engineers in the industry, contributing to the design, development, and delivery of physical distribution systems on a global scale. Your responsibilities will include managing technology or integration projects, ensuring that solutions are delivered successfully to meet project goals. You will engage directly with external equipment vendors, customers, and partners, leveraging your solid understanding of design approaches and industry technologies utilized in fulfillment and distribution center designs. To ensure that project timelines are met and disruptions to support teams are minimized, you will manage the overall project schedule, proactively mitigate risks, and maintain control over the scope of engineering deliverables. Your role will also involve leading effective meetings, documenting discussions and decisions, and communicating project status, risk analysis, and mitigation plans to leadership and management teams. You will be expected to build strong working relationships with stakeholders across multiple projects and identify process improvement initiatives that enhance engineering efficiencies and optimize team delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the lifecycle of challenging cross-functional projects, acting as the owner in delivering on project objectives and targets.
  • Participate in engineering reviews and impact proposed solutions on system architecture and facility processes.
  • Partner with internal teams and external vendors to set project priorities, establish milestones, and drive schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Lead execution efforts in delivering systems and automated equipment designs, performing installation and safety qualifications.
  • Conduct effective meetings, ensuring alignment on expectations with internal partner teams and outside vendors.
  • Communicate project status, risk analysis, and mitigation plans promptly and accurately.
  • Articulate system and equipment designs, including layouts and technical specifications, to internal customers and partner teams.
  • Support change order controls, purchase orders, and invoice validation/approvals.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across multiple projects.
  • Identify and lead process improvement initiatives to enhance engineering and cross-team efficiencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other STEM field.
  • 8+ years of experience as a Project Engineer, Process Engineer, Project Manager, Manufacturing Engineer, or related occupation.
  • Experience managing the lifecycle of cross-functional projects, implementing automated equipment and/or integrated systems.
  • Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, REVIT, BIM 360, etc.).
  • Experience supporting deployment of new product/technology and/or large material handling and automation installations in a construction environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Operations, Business Administration, or a related STEM field.
  • Operations Management/Distribution Center experience with direct management or responsibility for material handling, automation, or other technical projects.
  • Experience with Six Sigma and/or Lean Manufacturing.
  • Experience with Microsoft Project, Smartsheet programs.
  • Experience with new product introduction and/or implementation automation solutions, such as Conveyors, Sorters, high speed manufacturing and packaging lines, Robotic work cells.
  • Proven technical leadership for industrial engineering projects.
