About The Position

The Senior Paralegal position at Nationwide's Legal team involves providing comprehensive pre-trial and trial support for civil litigation matters, particularly in insurance defense. The position allows for a hybrid work model, combining remote and in-office work, and requires a strong understanding of legal concepts, terminology, and processes.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate studies in business administration, insurance, or related area preferred.
  • Certification in paralegal studies strongly preferred; or developed paralegal experience.
  • Typically five years of experience as a paralegal with proven experience in civil litigation.
  • General knowledge of law office operations, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience in filing and scheduling procedures of various courts, including federal and state e-filing systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and case management databases, such as Legal Files.

  • Understanding of insurance practice civil defense in state courts and agencies.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with attorneys, court personnel, and clients.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and technologically savvy.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct pre-trial and trial support for litigated matters of moderate to high complexity.
  • Assists in the preparation, review, filing, and service of pleadings, motions, discovery, and subpoenas.
  • Reviews and prepares documents for document production requests.
  • Analyzes and responds to incoming discovery.
  • Reviews and analyzes medical records.
  • Conducts legal research and writing assignments, including preparation of medical chronologies and deposition summaries.
  • Takes initiative to move case files to trial/resolution.
  • Works autonomously, with low supervision.
  • Coordinates and schedules depositions, hearings, and meetings, and communicates with clients and expert witnesses.
  • Provides administrative support to trial team(s) including retrieval of information from the document management system and assembly of exhibits for depositions and court filings.
  • Maintains working knowledge of court procedures and reviews court dockets for case information.
  • Prepares case file and discovery impact reports.
  • Understands and maintains confidentiality regarding attorney-client privilege and trial strategies.
  • Has in-depth knowledge of each file assigned to trial team(s) and assists in preparation for depositions and trials.
  • May assist Managing Attorney with workflow coordination and mentoring of new paralegals.
