About the position

The Sr. Payroll Specialist is responsible for performing specialized accounting functions and recommending as well as implementing solutions to various accounting problems. This role involves coordinating the preparation of data, computer input, account control, adjustments, corrections, and the reporting of financial data. The specialist will primarily support disbursements, including accounts payable and payroll, ensuring that all financial transactions are processed accurately and efficiently. In this position, the Sr. Payroll Specialist will prepare journal entries and reconcile account balances with appropriate records. They will conduct special investigations and compile accounting data for specific activities, ensuring that all financial data is accumulated, analyzed, and distributed correctly. The specialist will also coordinate accounting methods and recommend improvements in departmental procedures to enhance efficiency and compliance. The role requires performing liaison activities with accounting management and both internal and external customers. The specialist will investigate problems and implement corrective actions as necessary, reviewing and analyzing accounting data for compliance with policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and Department of Energy (DOE) orders. Additionally, the Sr. Payroll Specialist will assist in training personnel in various accounting routines and procedures, ensuring that all team members are well-versed in the necessary protocols. The position also involves analyzing financial system output and initiating corrections as required, performing, reviewing, and analyzing a variety of financial-related calculations. The specialist is expected to conduct all activities in a safe and healthy manner, adhering to established health, safety, and environmental (HS&E) requirements to protect employees, the public, and the environment. Employees are empowered to stop work when unsafe conditions or actions are identified, reinforcing a culture of safety within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Performs accounting services with primary support in Disbursements (Accounts Payable, Payroll).
  • Prepares journal entries and reconciles account balances with appropriate records.
  • Conducts special investigations and compiles accounting data for specific activities.
  • Coordinates or performs the accumulation, analysis and distribution of accounting data.
  • Coordinates accounting methods and recommends/implements improvement in departmental procedures.
  • Performs liaison activities with accounting management, internal and external customers.
  • Investigates problems and implements corrective action.
  • Reviews and analyzes accounting data for compliance with policies, procedures, laws, regulations and DOE orders.
  • Assists in training personnel in various accounting routines and procedures.
  • Analyzes financial system output and initiates corrections as required.
  • Performs, reviews, and analyzes a variety of financial-related calculations.
  • Conducts activities in a safe and healthy manner and works in accordance with established HS&E requirements.

Requirements

  • High School diploma and 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% of the time.
  • United States Citizenship.
  • BS Degree with minimum 5 years of experience or 2 years of additional relevant experience is required.
  • BS degree in accounting preferred.
  • Experience with running a high volume payroll >3,000 employees.
  • Proficiency in computer software; ability to quickly analyze complex financial information and initiate/recommend appropriate actions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Additional college courses in accounting or 4 1/2 years in a lower level accounting position is also preferred.
